With Halloween coming up this Saturday, check out these tips to make it safe!
Costume & Visibility Safety
• Be seen: Add reflective tape, bright colors, or carry a flashlight or glow stick so drivers can spot you in the dark.
• Choose face paint: Use nontoxic face makeup instead of masks that can block vision. If wearing a mask, make sure it allows for clear sight and breathing.
• Check the fit: Pick flame-resistant costumes and make sure clothes and shoes fit properly to prevent trips and falls.
Trick-or-Treating & Walking
• Use sidewalks: Walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic on the left side of the road.
• Cross at corners: Always use designated crosswalks or street corners. Look left, right, and left again before stepping into the street.
• Supervise kids: Young children under age 12 should always be accompanied by an adult. Older kids should walk in groups and stick to a familiar, planned route with a set return time.
• Inspect treats: Wait until you get home to check all candy. Discard any open wrappers, homemade items, or suspicious-looking treats.
For Drivers
• Slow down: Drive with extra caution in residential neighborhoods and slow down during peak trick-or-treating hours.
• Eliminate distractions: Put away your phone and watch carefully for children darting from between parked cars or crossing driveways and alleys.
• Drive sober: Never drive impaired. Plan a designated driver or use a rideshare service.
As always, SPD will be very active in the neighborhoods while kids are trick-or-treating. We are also taking candy donations if you would like to donate for the officers to pass out Halloween night.
