This afternoon Dewey Fire & EMS was in attendance at the Mid-State Technical College Nexus Public Safety Center Campaign launch. “The Nexus Public Safety Center is a proposed state-of-the-art complex built to provide scenario-based simulations and field-based training in one collaborative hub.” Please check it out here - https://www.mstc.edu/about-us/foundation/community-partnership/nexus-public-safety-center

Checks were presented today by Gamber Johnson , Skyward, Inc , and several emergency services organizations. Thank you, thank you!!

Pleasd take some time to look at the link - you will learn the importance of this project. Now the project needs funding and other means of support. The project is going to work to get federal, state, and local funds. Several elected leaders spoke today on how they will fight for this government support. Beyond that, the need is large for business, community organizations, and others to help support.

Multiple leaders took the podium to speak about the project today. We thank them all, but want to give a warm accolade to Stevens Point Fire Department Chief J.B. Moody for his words today and leadership with this project.

Again – PLEASE check out the web site.

We trained on pumping water last evening.

Did you know that the water we fight fire with comes from natural sources? Like most rural areas we do not have a municipal water system. Dewey is blessed that we have 5 property owners that allow us access to fill water tenders (water on wheels) from water sources on their property. One uses the Wisconsin River and 4 are private ponds. At these "fill sites" we fill tenders using an engine (fire truck). We are also equipped to fill from any water source, using portable pumps. However we prefer our fill sites as filling with an engine goes much faster than using a portable pump.

Last Saturday, August 8 2026, a small but mighty crew did our annual required hose testing. This is a task we have yet to find a firefighter that loves completing. We went from 7a to around 4:30/5pm

Another example that displays the fortitude and dedication of our staff.

This past weekend 3 members of the Dewey Fire Department joined with other firefighters from multiple other area Fire departments and completed Basic Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) Class through Mid-State Technical College - School of Public Safety in Stevens Point and at the Wisconsin Rapids fire training grounds.

The focus of this class is firefighter survival skills and methods to help self-rescue/rendering aid with rescuing downed Firefighters on scene in case of a MAYDAY situation.

The heat of the weekend added more realism to the scenarios and put the students to the test for this physically demanding class.

An additional THANK YOU to Midstate and its local instructors for putting together this class offering for area departments.

Public Safety Announcement - there is smoke in the air - all over Wisconsin.

Do not call 911 unless something truly is on fire.

As reported in this news article, our Portage County 911 Comm Center has taken at least one call where the caller thought there was a fire.

You may need to change filters more frequently due to this - your furnace filter if running central air, your vehicle's cabin filter, home air purifiers, etc. Most vehicle's have a mode to recirculate the air inside your vehicle rather than pull from the outside, if humidity allows, this may be a wise option.

There are also heath warnings out for those susceptible to poor air quality.
