This week, teachers from across the district gathered for LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) professional development. This highly regarded program trains teachers in the Science of Reading, an evidence-based approach to teaching students how to read, write, and spell. The program breaks down why and how children learn to read, focusing on the essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Thank you to our teachers for putting in hard work to enhance their skills and continuing to make Stillwater a great place for children to learn and grow.

Stillwater School Board Member Dr. Marshall Baker Steps Down Following State Appointment
Board Seeks Ward 5 Replacement
(Stillwater, Oklahoma, June 4, 2026) Following his recent appointment to the Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board, Dr. Marshall Baker has resigned from his position on the Stillwater Board of Education. Under Oklahoma state law, concurrent service on a state board and a local school board is prohibited.
Dr. Baker has a long history of service with Stillwater Public Schools. He has served on the Board of Education since 2021 and previously served from 2017 to 2018. During his tenure, he held multiple leadership roles, including Board President, Vice President, and committee leadership responsibilities. Prior to his time on the board, Dr. Baker served the district as principal of Lincoln Alternative Academy and assistant principal and principal at Stillwater Junior High School. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to expanding opportunities for students and strengthening public education in Oklahoma.
"It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve the students, families, staff, and community of Stillwater Public Schools," said Dr. Baker. "This community has shaped me both personally and professionally, and I am deeply grateful for the trust that voters, fellow board members, and district leaders have placed in me over the years.
Baker continued, “While stepping away from the local board is difficult, my resignation is not a departure from public education, but rather a continuation of my commitment to educational opportunity and student success. I believe I have been called to serve Oklahoma in a different capacity, and I look forward to bringing the lessons I've learned in Stillwater to statewide conversations while continuing to champion the success of Stillwater Public Schools.”
“Although my service on the board is coming to an end, my connection to Stillwater Public Schools is not,” he said. “As a parent, community member, and advocate for public education, I will continue finding new ways to support and serve our students, educators, and schools in the years ahead."
Following acceptance of Dr. Baker’s resignation at a special meeting on June 4, the board officially opened the application process to fill the vacancy.
Applications will be available online at stillwaterschools.com/board beginning at 9am on Friday, June 5 and will be accepted until 4pm on June 25. The board plans to swear in their appointee at the regular July 14 meeting. To be eligible, applicants must reside within Ward 5. A map and detailed boundary description of the district wards can be found on the board’s webpage.
Because the position was vacated during the first half of its current term, the chosen appointee will serve until a special election is held in 2027.
"I want to thank Dr. Baker for his dedicated service to the Stillwater Board of Education," said Superintendent Tyler Bridges. "The countless hours he has invested in our students, staff, and community have left a lasting positive impact, and we wish him the best in his new state-level role."
For questions regarding the application process, please contact Board Clerk Tawni Hooten at 405.533.6300.
