It’s World Animal Day, which makes this the perfect day to highlight some of our favorite four-legged friends, the dogs of our K-9 Team and the horses on our Mounted Patrol Unit.
Our K9 Team is overseen by a sworn sergeant and consists of six dual-purpose patrol K9s, two K9s who work alongside our Narcotics detectives and one therapy dog embedded within our Coordinated Response Team. These nine canines play a crucial role alongside their handlers, whether it's finding and taking drugs off the streets of Washington County, locating missing persons or emotionally supporting those who need it, we are grateful to have them on our team.
The Washington County Mounted Patrol Unit began in 1994 and currently consists of seventeen volunteer Mounted Patrol Deputies and their equine partners who are overseen by a Mounted Patrol liaison deputy. You may have met our Mounted Patrol Team at the Washington County Fair or seen them in a local parade, but did you know they are also trained to assist in search and rescue efforts?
Happy World Animal Day to all the hooves and paws that help carry the weight of the badge, but especially to the canines and horses of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
