County crews are busy getting ready for winter at Snowplow Operator Training (SPOT)! Held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds with other local agencies, SPOT is a set of skills (standards), achieved through training, for snowplow operators. Participants are trained on how to safely inspect, drive, and operate an over-width commercial motor vehicle with front and wing plows.

Beginning Thursday, October 22 at 9 p.m., the intersection of Highway 95 (Manning Ave) and County Highway 18 (Bailey Road) in the City of Woodbury, MN - Government will be closed to install permanent lighting and remove barrier. The closure is anticipated to be removed by 5 a.m. the following day, Friday, October 22. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes. The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is seeking participants for the 10,000 Families Study, a study of family health in Minnesota and neighboring states. The study aims to understand the influence of genetics, lifestyle, and environment on health and illness, with a particular focus on forever chemicals (PFAS), glyphosate, and radon, and their possible connection to blood cancers. The Washington County Board of Commissioners scheduled two public hearings for November 17. The hearings will consider:

•The county’s 2027-2031 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
•An update to the eligibility list associated with the county’s current Transportation Sales, Use and Excise Tax. This update would include shifting more funding to transportation from transit projects.

The board will consider adopting these items at its December 15 meeting.

Reminder: Applications for community-based projects seeking opioid settlement funding are due by Friday, October 16.

Eligible projects must serve Washington County community members and fall into one or more categories outlined in the application. Examples include evidence-based primary prevention programs, harm reduction services, and Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) treatment.
