FOLIO honored eleven Standout Friends from around Oklahoma at the FOLIO Splash meeting at the Southwest Oklahoma City Library on October 10, 2026. Dan Armstrong, an active, devoted member of the Stillwater Public Library Friends, was recognized as a “Standout Friend of the Library.”
Armstrong was nominated by the Friends and submitted by Friends Board Member Diane Caneday saying, “Dan is a dedicated, energetic volunteer whose initiative has transformed our lobby book sales and strengthened our service to the community.”
Caneday relates that “Dan first became involved after recognizing that our small lobby sales area could offer more books to library visitors. He volunteered to help, learned the process from the board member overseeing the program and soon assumed responsibility for it. He expanded and improved the display, creating what the Friends now consider our third book sale because of the revenue it generates throughout the year.”
Armstrong contributes 15 to 20 hours each week reviewing donated books, selecting titles that will appeal to customers, labeling inventory, refreshing displays and removing older items. His work has helped lobby sales surpass previous records, providing funds for library programs, events and other needs.
His commitment extends well beyond the sales shelves. He joined the Friends of the Library Board, attends meetings, reports on lobby sales and contributes additional hours during the twice-yearly book sales. Friendly, knowledgeable and dependable, he also offers thoughtful advice on issues before the board.
Armstrong also assists volunteers in the sorting room by moving boxes and preparing donated materials for processing. Because Armstrong is at the library nearly every day it is open; staff and visitors know him well. He gladly helps customers locate specific titles and recommends books they may enjoy. His enthusiasm is evident, and his time, energy and expertise make him an invaluable member of the Stillwater Friends of the Library.
