What happens when a map says your community has internet, but people who live there tell a different story? As I’ve traveled Oklahoma, community leaders have raised concerns with me about inaccuracies in federal broadband maps. Those concerns deserve investigation because behind every location on that map is someone trying to get something done.
A student completing an assignment. A town, like Bell, who has no connectivity. A community like Okfuskee County that is working to expand but limited with resources. A small-business owner reaching customers. A family trying to connect with a healthcare provider. A mayor who cannot connect to the internet in their office. These are real examples that I have heard as I traveled the state.
As an educator, I know that assigning work and making sure a student has the resources to complete it are two different responsibilities. Government needs to ask that same practical question: Can people actually access what we’re counting on them to use?
That’s one reason this Lieutenant Governor election matters. The Lieutenant Governor serves on the Oklahoma Broadband Governing Board, which oversees the Broadband Office and sets broadband expansion policy.
When hired as your next Lieutenant Governor, I’ll use that seat to ask how reported coverage is being checked against communities’ experiences. I’ll bring local leaders, Tribal nations, residents, providers, and Broadband Office staff together to document discrepancies and help communities navigate the appropriate correction process. I’ll also ask what happens after construction: Is service available to order? Can families afford it? What barriers remain?
Those are separate questions, and each deserves an answer. A completed project should move us closer to a connected community. We need to follow through until people can use the opportunity we’ve promised.
Oklahomans should be able to see their daily lives reflected in the decisions made about them, and when their experience challenges the map, I want a closer look.
I am laser focused on Oklahoma and I believe our best days are ahead.
Let’s move Oklahoma forward…together! I love you, Oklahoma. All of you.
