PREVAIL started with a garage sale. In 1976 our founders raised $275 and used it to open a door that hadn't existed in this county before. We've been thinking about that number all year, because it's still an amount a real person can actually give. What $275 bought in 1976 was a beginning. If PREVAIL has been a part of your journey at any point over the last fifty years, we want to start by saying how honored we are to have walked alongside you.

If you've reached a place in your healing where you'd feel comfortable sharing a piece of your story, our hearts and doors are always open to listen. Please know there is absolutely no pressure, no expectations, and no "right" way to do this. Whether you want to write a few thoughts down, have a quiet chat with one person, or simply ask a question—you are in complete control of your story.

And if today isn't the right time (or if it never is), that is completely okay, too. If you're curious at all, send us a gentle message and we will move entirely at your pace, whenever you're ready.

In 1976, eight courageous women in Stockton held a neighborhood garage sale, raised $275, and made a fearless decision: to build a lifeline for survivors when almost no safety net existed. Fifty years later, that bold grassroots effort has grown into PREVAIL!

Our name has evolved twice over five decades—from the Women's Center to Women's Center-YFS, and now PREVAIL—because as our community's needs grew, the promise those founding women made only got bigger. They laid the groundwork for California's domestic violence movement, and we are proud to carry their legacy forward every single day.

We can hardly believe our 50-Year Celebration is almost here!

If you or your organization have been hoping to get involved, it's not too late. So many people who turn to PREVAIL have spent a long time feeling unheard, overlooked, or told their story didn't matter. Our advocates are here to change that. Today, PREVAIL was honored to receive a Domestic Violence Awareness Month proclamation from the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors. Thank you to Supervisor Mario Gardea for bringing this proclamation forward and recognizing our shared commitment to supporting survivors.

This recognition holds special meaning as PREVAIL celebrates 50 years of serving survivors. From Women’s Center to PREVAIL—same mission, same heart, and five decades of hope, healing, and advocacy.

This work is made possible through partnership. We are grateful to the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office, San Joaquin County Family Justice Center, Victim Witness, law enforcement, and the many community agencies and advocates who work alongside us to help survivors find a path to safety and healing.

Together, we honor survivors’ voices, strengthen access to support, and build a community where everyone deserves to live free from violence.

In long-term abusive relationships, the dynamic is rarely a simple, one-dimensional story. Over time, as someone experiences ongoing coercive control, emotional battering, or fear, they may eventually fight back—verbally, emotionally, or physically.

This reactive self-defense can create a confusing back-and-forth where survivors start to blame themselves, asking: "Am I the problem?"

Trauma-informed care means looking past the chaos of a single moment to understand the bigger pattern of power and control. If you've ever felt guilty for how you responded to being hurt, please know that your reaction doesn't erase what you were put through. You deserve peace, clarity, and support.
