Stony Brook Fire Department Stony Brook Fire Rescue We strongly believe in fire prevention and education as valuable tools.

The Stony Brook Fire Department protects the historic community of Stony Brook, which is located on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. Our duty and goals are to provide the highest level of fire protection and emergency medical services to the residents of the Stony Brook Fire District. The entire membership of the Stony Brook Fire Department are volunteers, and we are dedicated to protect the lives, property, and businesses within our boundaries. These programs assist us in preventing fires and injuries to our residents, who have entrusted their personal safety and homes to us. We also are ready, willing, and trained to extend our services to our neighboring districts should they require our assistance under mutual aid policies.

πŸ”₯ Kitchen Safety: Never pour water on grease firesβ€”slide a metal lid over the pan to starve it of oxygen. Keep an extinguisher ready and remember PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
🏠 Home Protection: Home sprinklers suppress room fires in seconds; working smoke alarms buy vital escape time.
πŸšͺ Family Action Plan: Run an EDITH drill (Exit Drills In The Home) tonight. Verify two ways out of every room and designate an outdoor meeting spot in your yard.

Tonight at our weekly probationary training, members got a hands-on lesson in fire behavior and flow paths!

Thanks to Lt. Steck, who built a dollhouse training prop, our probationary firefighters were able to see firsthand how fire, heat, and smoke travel through a structure and how ventilation can impact fire conditions.

This training helps our firefighters better understand the importance of coordinated ventilation and fire attack, allowing them to make safer and more effective decisions on the fireground.

A huge thank you to Lt. Steck for taking the time to build this prop and put together another great night of training!

Last night, while crews were in-house providing standby coverage during the Nor’easter, members took advantage of the time to sharpen their skills by practicing various victim removal techniques.

Training opportunities like these help keep our members prepared to safely and efficiently remove victims during fires and other emergency situations.

Great work by everyone who participated, and thank you to our members for remaining ready to serve our community throughout the storm! πŸš’πŸŒ§οΈ

Mutual Aid – Working Structure Fire

On Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at approximately 6:17 AM, the Stony Brook Fire Department was requested to provide mutual aid to the Setauket Fire Department for a working structure fire at the Holiday Inn Express on Route 347.

3rd Assistant Chief Trapani, Ladder 16, along with Fire Police 10 and 11 responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, Stony Brook crews assisted Setauket firefighters with overhaul operations following a fire on the fifth floor of the hotel.

All Stony Brook units were released from the scene and back in service by approximately 7:15 AM.

Nice work by all members who responded, and thank you to the Setauket Fire Department and all mutual aid agencies for their teamwork and coordination.
