The Stromsburg and Polk Fire Departments have been offering for sale water can fire extinguishers. We have had an excellent response that we needed to go pick up more this morning. We have extras available for immediate sale(even over the upcoming weekend). With harvest getting full swing and the warm, dry, and breezy conditions coming, now would be a good time to get one. These will be ready to use when you pick it up. Contact either one of the departments members to purchase or for more information. Be safe

Only a couple days into harvest and our first field fire yesterday. While this one was small and easily contained and extinguished, any field fire that starts can spread quickly. If you see the forecast for this upcoming weekend it looks warm and breezy/windy. If possible please have a tractor and disk at the field you are harvesting at. With these kind of conditions tillage is one of the best ways to contain fire spread. We would encourage you to let the fire chief in your fire district know where tractors and disks will be located so we are able to quickly deploy them if needed. Be safe.

With the rain giving us a break to allow harvest to begin we are now implementing our harvest burn ban effective as on now. No burn permits will be issued until harvest is complete. If you haven’t noticed to crops are looking like it’s November, the residue is extremely dry even with all of the moisture we have received. Also please be careful as there will be a lot of farm machinery and trucks out and about very soon. We are asking everyone to be safe during this busy time.

The members of the Stromsburg
Volunteer Fire Department are offering for sale water can extinguishers. These are excellent for both agricultural or home applications. Contact any member of the department to get more information on purchasing one or more of these.
Also if you happen to have one of these and you aren’t sure if it works or it needs recharged, contact a department member and we will glad to look it over. Before harvest gets into full swing, it would be a good time to make sure you are prepared.

Our fire departments annual golf tournament is coming up on Saturday , June 27th. This tournament is a philanthropic project we started over 5 years ago to raise funds for other first responders and/or their families in their time of need. None of the funds raised during this event go to our own department for any projects. Just first responders helping other first responders.

Since we have started this tournament, we have had no shortages of first responders to help. Some of the donations have been direct donations to first responders or their families while some unfortunately have been memorials.

First responders and/or their families or memorials in the following Nebraska communities have received some donations from this golf tournament they include Daykin, Phillips, Genoa, Bradshaw, Bancroft, Osceola, Polk, Syracuse, Carroll, Elwood, Wilcox, Deshler, Morse Bluff, Atkinson, Farnham, Sterling, Bellwood, Crete, Purdum, Thedford, Norfolk, Rising City, Gresham, Utica, Staplehurst, and Shelby. We have even be able to make a donation to Waynoka, OK. All of these donations have a story behind each of them. We hope the amount we can provide helps even just a little in their time of need.

With the rain I am sure there will be questions on burn permits. Please understand that we are in continuous burn ban that goes beyond our control until April 10th. Our entire state is in unprecedented conditions as far as fire danger, to the point that we have wildland task forces station across our state (even one stationed in Columbus). Please be kind and understand when we tell you we cannot give permits. Hopefully we will continue to get rain and return to normal. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.

The Governor has extended the Open Burn Prohibition for two more weeks. The new termination date is 11:59 PM on April 10th.
There have been a lot of questions about how this prohibition is applied. The Executive Order specifically prohibits fire chiefs from issuing open burn permits, land management burn permits and the State Fire Marshal’s Office from issuing Training Burn permits. While the prohibition does not address contained fires like burn barrels or recreational fires, no open fires should be conducted. It is a commonsense issue. Also, Game and Parks verified that fires are not permitted on their properties until further notice.

With the current dry and warm weather we are experiencing and looking at the extended forecast we are in for an extended time where absolutely NO BURNING of any kind will be allowed, this includes fire pits. Any report of a fire of any kind will be extinguished by our fire department. Also if you are pulling a trailer, please make sure the safety chains are not dragging, and always do not discard smoking materials out of your vehicle. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
