Well, unfortunately, crime is afoot at Dexter Elementary School and shockingly, it does not involve the candy thief.
However, identity theft is no joke, and I think we need to get that message to our students, loud and clear.
It all started innocently enough, an SRO just trying to hand out prizes for September's book club review winners. The SRO really tries to keep up with the names of 800+ Wildcats, however, sometimes she does mess up. Heck, she messes up her own kids' names so please cut her some slack.
The SRO sees a student and knows exactly who they are but accidently calls the student by their sibling's name. However, the student doesn't correct the SRO. The SRO continues to use the sibling's name, repeatedly, and still, no correction. Perhaps this had something to do with the other sibling winning a prize for a book club review. A book club review that was not even completed by this student. However, the identify theft committed by this student-sibling resulted in the fraudulent award of a free sandwich to Subway.
Only later, when this SRO sees the other sibling, does she realize that she gave a prize to the wrong sibling. The wrong sibling that repeatedly let the SRO call them by their sibling's name.
Result? Mistakes happen. The SRO righted the wrong by awarding the correct student-sibling with the prize for a book club review. The SRO also tattled to the correct student about why their sibling also got a prize.
PS: The SRO also let the identity thief keep the prize. Again, mistakes happen. Maybe they didn't want to correct me. Or maybe the guaranteed aroma of Subway was just too much to resist. Either way, both of them can enjoy a laugh over a sandwich. Or, well, two sandwiches.
