Happy National Farmer's Day! 🚜
In 1955, Martin County’s watermelon harvest was big business. This Earl Dyer Ricou photograph appeared in the Stuart News on May 26 under the headline, “County’s Watermelon Production Total Passes Half Million.” That year, 334 carloads of Martin County melons were shipped from Indiantown by Seaboard Air Line Railroad, with another 60 carloads shipped from Stuart.

Here, Buddy Beech supervises the loading while melons from the Scott & Beard farm wait to be shipped across the country. Scan gift of Sandra Thurlow.

Happy World Teacher's Day! 🍎
Felix Williams stands under the arch and in front of the pulpit at old St. Paul's AME Church.

Felix Williams taught agriculture and science at several schools, including the Stuart Training School. He became the principal for East Stuart Elementary and was later promoted to the director of exceptional student education for Martin County School District. Williams was awarded "Teacher of the Year" for the State of Florida in 1957 and was the first Black American to run for Stuart City Council in 1963.

In 1994, Felix A. Williams Elementary School was opened in (north) Stuart, named in his honor. Scan gift of Sandra Thurlow.
