It's National Principals Month! We're proud to feature another fantastic principal and tell his story: Ryan Westenskow, Principal of Sublimity School!
Ryan’s roots are firmly planted in education. Growing up in La Grande, Oregon, with a dad who was an elementary principal and a mom who was a reading teacher, it’s no surprise that education was a constant in his home—six of the nine kids in the family have worked in education!
Ryan’s work experience over the years has taken him from being a farm hand, gas station attendant (or Fuel Transfer Technician as Ryan likes to call it), grocery store clerk, Wendy’s crew member, and call center representative. The variety of experience didn’t stop once he joined the world of education, as he’s worked with students from kindergarten through college!
Ryan attended BYU for a BA in History, with a minor in Math Education, before earning his Master's in Education at Eastern Oregon University. Ryan taught middle and high school social studies for eight years before getting his Administrator License at George Fox and stepping into the principal role. In total, Ryan has 24 years of experience in education and is in his sixth year with the district as Principal at Sublimity School!
Q and A’s with Ryan:
Q: What is a skill that you learned from one of your first jobs that you use as a principal today?
A: As a call center agent for two weeks, I learned that I wanted to work with people in a face-to-face setting. That job was not for me!
Q: What was the absolute coolest trend or fashion item that stands out to you from middle school or high school?
A: Unfortunately, fashion and I have never been even remotely acquainted!
Q: What is one of your goals for your school this year?
A: Take learning and student achievement to another level.
Thank you, Ryan, for your dedication and daily leadership in our school and community!
You can come say hi to Ryan tonight at Sublimity’s school tour from 7:00-8:30pm. Learn more about the recent Facility Assessments, the Long-Range Facilities Committee’s work, and the future of Sublimity School!
