Mass Casualty Incident Training

For months, our department has been planning, preparing, and working toward a comprehensive Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) training exercise designed to prepare us for the realities of a large-scale emergency.

The scenario involved a semi-truck and driver, a passenger vehicle, and a school bus carrying children. While these were simulated circumstances, the purpose behind the training was very real: to ensure that, should our community ever face an actual mass casualty incident, we are prepared to respond with the highest level of coordination, skill, and readiness possible.

From the initial planning stages and tabletop discussions, to securing the necessary equipment and vehicles, to coordinating personnel and orchestrating the entire scene, this training required an incredible amount of time, communication, preparation, and teamwork. What the public sees on the day of an exercise represents countless hours of work that happen long before the first call is made.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed their time, equipment, knowledge, and expertise to making this training possible:

• Sullivan Fire and Rescue Volunteer Fire Department
• Metro Life Flight
• David Yarmesch
• Rick Moskalski Jr.
• Polk–Jackson–Perry Township Fire Department
• Ruggles–Troy Volunteer Fire Department
• Genesis Rescue Systems — Luke Ricketts and Marc Bishop

Your involvement helped make this exercise possible and, more importantly, helped strengthen our ability to work together when it matters most.

A very special thank-you goes to Chief Doug Campbell and Assistant Chief Jerry Schrock for the countless hours they devoted to planning, coordinating, preparing, and bringing this entire exercise together. Their commitment to ensuring our department is ready—not only individually, but as a unified team and alongside our mutual-aid partners—is deeply appreciated.

Training like this is not about hoping we will never need these skills. It is about making sure that if the day ever comes when we do, we are ready.

To every person who helped plan, prepare, participate, provide equipment, teach, coordinate, or support this exercise: thank you. Your time and dedication are an investment in the safety of our community, our neighboring communities, and the people we are called upon to serve.

Preparedness saves lives. Teamwork makes that preparedness possible.

At Sullivan Fire & Rescue, we believe the strength of our department is built on the dedication, commitment, and heart of the individuals who serve our community — and today, we want to recognize several outstanding members whose hard work continues to make us proud.

We would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Ashley Risner and Adam Risner on achieving their Firefighter 1 (FF1) certification. Ashley has been serving our department as an EMT and Adam has been serving our department as an EMR. Their commitment to expanding their training and strengthening their skills reflects the dedication needed to serve with excellence.

Congratulations as well to Nick Bodi and Leeanne Braden for successfully completing their Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification. Nick has been serving on our department as Firefighter 1 (FF1). Their willingness to step forward and further their medical training helps ensure we are always prepared to provide the best possible care to those we serve.

We would also like to recognize Nick Bodi on his well-earned promotion to Lieutenant. Leadership is built through hard work, trust, and commitment, and we are excited to see him continue to grow in this important role within our department.

A very special recognition goes to Miriam Schrock, who has accomplished something truly exceptional. Mariam recently became our newest Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and also earned the distinction of becoming our current department’s first Firefighter 2 (FF2). Miriam has just graduated from highschool!! As if that were not enough, she went on to represent Sullivan Fire & Rescue at the State EMS Competition, where she earned 1st Place, advancing to the National Competition, where she proudly finished 18th in the nation.

Each of these individuals represents the very best of Sullivan Fire & Rescue. Their dedication, sacrifice, and commitment to continual growth make our department stronger and better equipped to serve our community every day.

We are incredibly proud of each of you and grateful for the talent, leadership, and passion you bring to Sullivan Fire & Rescue.
Your hard work does not go unnoticed — and your department stands proud beside you

Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we often take for granted, and their courage will never be forgotten.
As fellow public servants, we understand the meaning of duty, sacrifice, and answering the call when others need help most. We stand humbled and grateful for those who made the ultimate sacrifice wearing the uniform of the United States Armed Forces.
This Memorial Day, we ask our community to remember not just the holiday, but the heroes behind it — the mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends, and neighbors who never made it home.
From all of us at the Volunteer Fire Department, we extend our deepest gratitude and remembrance to our fallen service members and their families.
May we never forget. 🇺🇸
