Today, our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters of Dorchester County Fire Rescue as they celebrate the life of Battalion Chief Chastity Bigney.

We hope everyone missing her today can find joy and peace in sharing fond memories of times around the table, running calls, and cutting up at the station with Chief Bigney.

Brothers and sisters, we are here if you need us.

Rest easy Chief Bigney, we got it from here.

Today, crews from Ladder 302 and Engine 302 got hands-on with Summerville Fire & Rescue's newest addition to our Special Operations equipment — the Paratech Flying Raker Shoring System, now carried on USAR 301!

This specialized equipment is designed to help stabilize damaged or compromised walls and structures during structural collapse and technical rescue incidents, providing a safer environment for rescuers to operate.

Crews spent this morning learning the equipment, assembling the system, and practicing deployment techniques to build confidence and proficiency.

And we're just getting started! Additional training is planned across all shifts as we continue expanding our structural collapse rescue capabilities and preparing our firefighters for complex emergencies.

Great work by our crews for putting in the time and effort to sharpen their skills!

Annual Fire Prevention Parade and Display was a success!

Summerville Fire Rescue hosted our annual Fire Prevention event this past Monday at Lowe’s on Main Street. Mother Nature cooperated just in time for the evening's events. Bertha led the parade from Oakbrook to Lowe’s, where many local fire departments joined us in showcasing their apparatus. We thank so many of our brothers and sisters from other departments for participating.

After the parade, our display this year was an auto extrication. Our ladder company demonstrated popping/removing doors, removing a roof, and rolling a dash with our tools. Just like in homes, our tools have rechargeable batteries that we have to practice safe charging habits.

1. Cheap charger? Don’t chance it. *Use the cord or charger that came with your device.

2. Soft Surface? Hard pass. *Charge on a hard, flat surface.

3. Fully Charged? Time to unplug. *Unplug your device when it reaches 100%.

4. For tools and rides, charge outside. *Charge e-bikes, scooters, and powertools outside when possible and do not block exits while charging.

5. Feels hot? Stop using it. *Stop using your device if it feels hot, swells, smells odd, leaks, smokes, or makes sounds.

6. On a flight? Keep in sight. *Keep you devices where you can see them while charging.

We want to thank all our vendors and sponsors who make this event a success; without their support and participation, this FREE, fun, and educational event would not be possible.

Thank you to Lowe's Home Improvement, our partners who let us host this event in their parking lot, built our new racing fire engines, and supplied food for all attendees. Thank you to Prince's Towing, LLC for the vehicle for our auto ex display. Thank you to Tony Pope - State Farm Agent for NFPA Fire Prevention 2026 materials to give to kids and families to help them learn how to make Safe Charging a Superpower in their home. Thank you to all our vendors who also participated and shared other fire and life safety messaging with our community: South Carolina State Firefighters' Association, Summerville Family YMCA, Tony Pope, Paul Davis Restoration of Charleston, American Red Cross, MUSC Children's Health Burn Center at Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital, ServiceMaster of Charleston, Dorchester County Fire Rescue, Dorchester County Sheriff's Office and Summerville Police Department.

Lastly, we thank all our citizens for your participation, support, and patience at our annual event. We hope everyone who came had a wonderful time, and we look forward to seeing you next year!
