Tied with Care: Washington School Prepares for Red Ribbon Week

Third graders at Washington Elementary School helped transform their school grounds by hanging bright red ribbons with school counselor Andrea Sadow in preparation for Red Ribbon Week.

Red Ribbon Week is a national annual campaign teaching students to make healthy, safe, and drug-free choices, focusing on wellness and positive habits.

Healthy Choices: Emphasizing balanced nutrition, activity, sleep, and physical care.

Social-Emotional Strength: Showing kindness, respect, and building supportive relationships.

Safety Awareness: Listening to trusted adults and making safe everyday decisions.

Throughout the week, teachers deliver grade-tailored lessons to reinforce healthy decision-making, resilience, and personal wellness.

The Student Voices Club hosted its annual Quesadilla Cook-Off, bringing students together for an afternoon of food, friendship, cultural appreciation, and community building. This much-anticipated event gave students the opportunity to prepare their own quesadillas, share the experience with their friends, and enjoy a fun and engaging way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

We are proud of the enthusiasm and spirit our students bring to these activities, and we look forward to continuing to provide opportunities that celebrate diversity and strengthen our school community.

Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School Sixth Graders participated in the annual STOKES Trip on the weekend of October 9-11! Led by Summit Staff, assisted by Summit High School Student Counselors, and supported by members of the Summit First Aid Squad and Police Department, STOKES gives our sixth graders a chance to meet new classmates, work together to solve problems, and have a wonderful time out in nature. Students came back to school singing their favorite campfire songs, talking about their favorite obstacle course activities, and wearing their tie-dye shirts and group bandanas!

It was a wonderful weekend that we're glad to share with our new sixth graders.

Summer Snyder, co-author of Teaching with Dignity, led an in-service session for Lincoln-Hubbard Elementary School teachers and staff titled "Dignity and Its Role in Growth Mindset." It was one of many sessions in district schools on the afternoon the October 12 Single Session In-Service day.

The Teaching with Dignity workshop kicked off with a playful rock-paper-scissors contest to foster a sense of fun and belonging. Snyder then shared a gardening analogy: just as plants require sunlight, water, air, soil, and space to thrive, students need promise, connection, expectations, action, and a supportive ecosystem to cultivate dignity and nurture a growth mindset.
