Bridges Outreach, Inc. Bridges ends homelessness through volunteer-driven outreach and individual case management focusing on health, housing, and independence.

We form relationships with those experiencing homelessness while meeting their most urgent needs. Bridges began in 1988 when Ginger and Geoff Worden, from Summit, New Jersey, reached out to homeless people in New York one Friday evening. They brought homemade sandwiches, thermoses of coffee, and a genuine interest in conversation. Over the last 32 years, Bridges hasn’t missed a weekly Run (outreach visit) into New York City until the pandemic. In addition to the Friday night Runs to lower Manhattan, we visit various locations every Saturday in Newark and on Sundays we go to Irvington. Since the pandemic, we now do street. outreach seven nights a week in Newark. Through its weekly Runs, Bridges' volunteers provide immediate necessities including brown bag lunches, clothing and toiletries to homeless neighbors. A run is an opportunity for our student and adult volunteers to share conversation, friendship and hope to work towards Bridges' mission of ending homelessness through volunteer-driven outreach and case management focusing on health, housing and independence. On a Bridges' Run understanding develops, caring overcomes indifference, a sense of purpose prevails and friendships are formed based on mutual respect. Volunteers are the backbone of Bridges. Over 60 groups from high schools (both private and public), houses of worship, civic organizations and businesses volunteer with Bridges and go out on the weekly Run. In addition hundreds of volunteers help Bridges fulfill its mission by making brown bag lunches, donating clothing, toiletries, blankets and other necessities.

Today is World Homeless Day, a day to raise awareness, advocate for change, and bring communities together to take action against homelessness.

For Bridges, this work doesn’t happen just one day a year. Every day, our team and community partners work to support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness and help build paths to long-term stability.

Recently, volunteers, families, and community partners have come together through packing events, soup warmings, clothing drives, water donations, and so much more to help meet immediate needs in our community.

Every action matters in the work to end homelessness.

Thank you to everyone who contributes to our mission, especially Boston Consulting Group, Ogden Memorial Presbyterian Church, Optum, Teens Tackle Homelessness, Hoodies for the Homeless - Summit, and St. Catherine of Siena for their recent contributions and generosity!

We’re proud to see Brenda Myrick, Director of Programs & Impact at Bridges Outreach, representing us at the Housing as a Human Right: Access, Stability, & Production Conference, hosted by Monarch Housing Associates, Inc.

Brenda also serves as Chair of NJ-504 Newark-Essex County Continuum of Care (CoC) Comprehensive Emergency Assistance System (CEAS), bringing additional experience and perspective to conversations surrounding housing and homelessness.

As part of the panel, she spoke about the new Housing Stability Institute workforce training initiative and answered questions from participants, bringing a provider perspective to the conversation around housing access and stability.

Opportunities like this allow our team to share what we’re seeing through our work, connect with fellow housing professionals, and contribute to conversations that help strengthen housing stability across New Jersey.

We’re incredibly grateful to the Vericon Foundation for selecting Bridges Outreach as a beneficiary of its biennial golf outing!

Thank you to everyone at Vericon Construction Company, along with all of the golfers, sponsors, and supporters who helped make the event a success. We’re honored to benefit from this generosity, which will help support our work connecting individuals experiencing homelessness with the resources and housing-focused support they need to move toward stability.

Last week, we celebrated Ed's 67th birthday!

For Ed, this birthday represents more than another year—it’s a milestone in a journey that began after eight years of experiencing homelessness.

Ed first connected with Bridges in 2022 and, with ongoing case management, advocacy, and his own determination, continued working toward housing. In February 2025, he moved into a studio apartment in downtown Summit.

Today, Ed remains successfully housed in the same home, continuing to build financial stability and save for his future.

We’re grateful to celebrate this milestone with Ed and all that he has accomplished. Happy Birthday, Ed!

Meet Stephanie, our Program Manager at the H.E.L.P. Center in Newark!

Stephanie plays an important role in helping shelter residents navigate services, overcome barriers, and move toward housing stability. Working closely with the shelter and housing teams, she coordinates referrals, connects residents with resources, and ensures they have the support needed to move forward.

This month, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the people who make this work possible every day.
