💜 Remembering lives. Standing with survivors.

NEWARC was honored to attend this year’s Silent Witness Ceremony alongside Weston County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Stulken, Director Sandy Stevens, Newcastle Police Chief Derek Thompson, Newcastle City Attorney Dublin Hughes, Advocate Kayleigh Gould, and Advocate Brookelyn Weigel.

The silhouettes, the presentation on stage, and the purple ribbon outside the college offered powerful reminders of the lives lost to domestic violence and the importance of supporting those affected.

We are grateful to everyone who gathered to remember, raise awareness, and stand together in support of survivors. 💜

💜 Look for purple candles in business windows this month!

Yesterday, we visited businesses along Main Street to drop off purple candles for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Purple is the awareness color for domestic violence, and these candles are a visible sign of support for survivors and a reminder that no one has to face abuse alone.

Thank you to the local businesses helping us raise awareness and show survivors that our community cares. As you’re out and about this October, watch for the purple glow in their windows! 🕯️💜

We have more candles available! If your business would like to participate, send us a message—we’d love to have you join us.

The more we understand the realities of domestic abuse, the better equipped we are to recognize it, respond with compassion, and support those who may be experiencing it.

Your phone can be a lifeline… or a leash.

We love tech for the convenience: maps that reroute traffic, phones that unlock with a glance, and memories stored in our pockets. But the same tools can be weaponized when someone wants to stalk, monitor, or control a partner.

Experts warn that what once required serious tech skills can now be as simple as secretly downloading an app. From there, a perpetrator may be able to track activity, read messages, view photos, listen in, or even control calls—turning everyday devices into tools of abuse. 📱🕵️‍♀️

What’s one “normal” phone feature you think people should understand better to stay safe—and why? Share your thoughts (or this post) to help someone else spot the red flags. 💜

Domestic violence affects people across every community.

Our years of providing 24/7 support, information and advocacy to people experiencing domestic violence have been shaped by the realities behind statistics like these.

Understanding the prevalence of domestic violence helps us recognize the signs, challenge misconceptions, and better support people who may be experiencing abuse.

The more informed we are, the better prepared we are to show up for survivors and help create safer communities.

While all domestic violence cases do not escalate to mass shootings, the connection between access to guns, mass shootings, and domestic violence is clear: intimate partner violence, community violence, mass casualty events are inextricably linked. Today, we celebrate the life of Gloria Steinem, the feminist icon who pushed for social change, helped jumpstart r**e crisis centers and domestic violence shelters, and co-founded the first women-run publication, Ms. Magazine, which continues to lead the most important conversations concerning the rights of women.

Our movement is better thanks to her influence, strength, and bravery—and we will continue to be guided by her wisdom moving forward.

Rest in power, Gloria.
