DID ANYBODY HEAR THAT THUNDER?! Yeah… that wasn’t thunder.
That was MORE THAN 500 MOTORCYCLES, stretching OVER SEVEN MILES, rolling through the West side in one absolutely incredible display of patriotism, service, brotherhood, sisterhood, and American pride!
Today, officers with the Sunrise Beach Police Department had the absolute honor of escorting the Zack Wheat American Legion Post 624 Patriot Riders, along with their fellow riders from across the State of Missouri, on a ride we won’t soon forget.
And when we say this thing was HUGE, we mean it, more than 500 motorcycles! In case you’re curious what that looks like it stretched more than seven miles from front to back.
But as incredible as that sight was, the best part might have been who was waiting along the route.
The route was designed to pass Hurricane Deck Elementary, where students were outside waving flags and cheering them on. From there, the ride traveled north through Stover and Versailles, where hundreds of students came out at both Morgan County R-I and Versailles to welcome the riders.
THAT is what made today special.
These riders weren’t just out there to put some miles on their bikes. Many of them are veterans who spent years serving our country, and today they got to see hundreds of kids waving American flags, cheering them on, and saying thank you in the loudest way kids know how.
And those kids got something pretty awesome in return: a chance to see patriotism, service, sacrifice, and community roll right past them - 500 motorcycles strong.
We like to think that somewhere in that crowd were our nation’s next Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen, Guardians, or Coast Guardsmen. Each Patriot rider rode today in hopes to plant a little seed about what it means to serve something bigger than yourself.
We also owe a HUGE THANK YOU to the Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District, Laurie Police Department, Stover Police Department , Versailles Police Department, Morgan County Sheriff's Office, and Camden County Sheriff's Office. An event of this size doesn’t happen safely by accident. It takes planning, communication, teamwork, and a whole bunch of people working together across jurisdictional lines. Also a special thanks to Ozarks International Raceway for getting them all on the track for a little fun!
And to everyone traveling Highway 5, 135 and 52 today: THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE. We know a procession stretching more than seven miles can make for a bit of a wait. The patience, respect, waves, and support shown along the route did not go unnoticed. You each helped make today what it was.
Each year the Zack Wheat American Legion Memorial Ride continues to grow, and after seeing what rolled through our communities today… We can’t wait to see what they bring us next year.
To every veteran who rode today: thank you for your service.
To every kid who stood along that route: thank you for reminding them why they served.
And to everyone who helped make it happen:
THIS. WAS. AWESOME.
500+ motorcycles.
7+ miles of American pride.
One “heck” of a day in the Lake area.
