On Thursday Superior VFD responded for mutual aid to Courtland KS for a fast moving grass fire that originated approximately 4 miles northeast of Courtland. The fire spread rapidly to the northeast with the high winds. Our guys responded with 2 grass rigs and a tanker. Special thanks to Nelson VFD for being on standby to cover our area if necessary. Our last unit was cleared from the scene at approximately 18:30 and returned to the station to be cleaned, fueled, and re-stocked before being put away.

Another thanks goes out to the business, and individuals from our community who provided their trucks and trailers for water supply. Had the fire crossed the white rock Creek, or 40 road, we would have had a mess.

Additionally, to our local farmers, without your tractors and disks, the results of this fire would have been entirely different. Thank you!

I don't have a total number however there were departments from as far as Chester in Nebraska, and Glasco in Kansas. Also the Kansas forest service was on scene with several command vehicles, and an aerial tanker providing water drops.

The good news, no homes perished, thanks to the hard work of all of the departments involved. Courtland rural did a great job, along side of Republic co dispatch in getting folks where they needed to be.

A final thanks to the Superior Fire Department Auxillary, who was actively working behind the scenes to provide food and relief to our members if the fire had gone on into the night!

Teamwork makes the Dream Work!!!

Our friends from Courtland, Formoso, and Hardy joined us Monday night to try out the burn trailer. They took advantage of heavy smoke conditions and near black visibility to hone their skills with SCBA, as well as see the effects of hydraulic ventilation, and proper use of positive pressure fans.

If any of this seems fun to you, please reach out to your local fire department. There's many roles to be filled, if smoky dark rooms aren't your thing! Heck maybe you can fulfil your childhood dream to drive the big red truck.

Monday night we were able to take advantage of our live burn simulator. Thanks to TJ and everyone at Superior Industries for converting this shipping container for us.

Members got some valuable training with real smoke, and real fire.

02/01/2026

SVFD was paged this morning to an occupied structure with smoke coming from the walls. Engine 134 was first on scene, established a water supply and did a 360 as other units were arriving. It was found to be an electrical fault within the wall.

Superior Rescue 99 transported the occupant, and fire crews began opening the wall in order to locate and extinguish the fire. Thankfully blown in insulation slowed the spread of fire and it was contained to a small area. The structure was then ventilated to remove smoke.

Thanks to Superior Utilities crews for responding to handle the electrical and gas.
