(Superior, WI) – Vehicle-School Bus Crash

On Thursday, October 22, 2026 at approximately 8:19am, a minor crash occurred at Belknap Street and East 5th Street involving a passenger vehicle and a Superior School Bus.
Officers responded to the scene along with Mayo Ambulance and the Superior Fire Department. It was verified that none of the students or drivers were injured. Out of an abundance of caution, one student was evaluated by EMT’s on the scene. That student’s mother was contacted and advised of their assessment prior to releasing the student to continue to school.
Another school bus was dispatched and safely transported the students to Northern Lights Elementary.

Every day, thousands of Wisconsin students depend on school buses to get to and from school safely. Protecting them is a shared responsibility across our community.
Wisconsin school bus safety Laws drivers must know:
-The 20-Foot Rule: You must stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus when its red warning lights are flashing, whether approaching from the front or rear.
-Divided Highways: On roads separated by a physical median, opposing traffic is not required to stop. However, if there is no physical barrier (even on multi-lane streets), all lanes must stop.
-Watch the Lights: Amber (yellow) flashing lights mean the bus is slowing down to stop and the bus stop sign is about to come out. Do not speed up to pass.
-Strict Penalties: Passing a stopped school bus with red lights flashing carries steep fines ranging from $500 to $1,000. Vehicle owners can also be cited if reported by a bus driver.
Slow down in school zones, stay off your phone, and give our buses space. Let's work together to keep kids safe!

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to Cathedral School and the Knights of Columbus for hosting today's beautiful Blue Mass. It was a true privilege to be honored alongside fellow law enforcement, public safety personnel, fire fighters, EMS, and military veterans at Cathedral of Christ the King. The special blessing of our personnel and vehicles meant a great deal to us, and we especially loved answering the students' questions during the reception downstairs, which, of course, included donuts. Thank you to Father Andrew Ricci and the Cathedral School family for your generous support and for giving us the opportunity to connect with the students.

The St. Louis River Rendezvous will take place today through Saturday. Thursday and Friday, they will host local students in grades 5-8. Saturday will be free and open to the public from 10:00am - 2:00pm.

A heads up for our Billings Park neighbors: things are going to get a little loud this week. đź’Ą

“Cannon blasts” isn’t something we see on every special event permit that comes across our desk, so this one seemed worth a heads up.

We’re excited to host the first annual St. Louis River Rendezvous at Girl Scout Point in Billings Park, bringing the long-running tradition of the former Lester River Rendezvous to its new home in Superior. The event is led by experienced living-history professionals, with demonstrations throughout the three days, including cannon fire.

Tomorrow, Sept. 24 and Friday, Sept. 25, expect to hear cannon fire about every 20 minutes between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 26, the cannon will fire about once an hour during that same timeframe.

So if you live nearby and hear a BOOM, no need for alarm. It’s just history happening in the park.

Saturday’s Voyageur Village is open to the public from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. and is free to attend. Come check out the new home for this longtime local tradition! More information in the first comment.
