🚒 **Almost a Perfectly Quiet Shift!**
B Shift went off duty this morning after one of the quietest 24-hour shifts we've had in quite some time!
We almost made it through the entire shift without a single emergency call, but a routine medical call at 2:30 AM broke our streak. We'll take it, though! A quiet shift means our community is having a good day.
There's a common misconception that firefighters spend most of their shifts sitting in recliners waiting for the next call. While we certainly enjoy some downtime when we can get it, the reality is a little different.
**Here's a look at what keeps us busy:**
🚨 **1,800 Incidents:** So far in 2026, we've responded to approximately 1,800 incidents, already surpassing the 1,400 we responded to during all of 2025!
🔥 **2,342 Training Hours:** Our firefighters have completed a combined 2,342 hours of fire training this year, in addition to the 20 hours of annual medical continuing education required of each member.
🚒 **Daily Responsibilities:** Every day of the week includes assigned duties ranging from station cleaning and maintenance to vehicle inspections, equipment checks, and apparatus upkeep.
📋 **Behind the Scenes:** Our officers manage numerous departmental programs and administrative responsibilities on top of their regular duties. Many of these programs are handled by dedicated full-time employees in larger departments. **We may be a small department, but that doesn't make these programs any smaller or easier to manage!**
👨🚒 **Community Safety:** Fire prevention, public education, station tours, and community events are also part of what we do.
🌙 **583 Nighttime Calls:** Since January 1, we've responded to 583 emergencies between 8 PM and 7 AM. That's a lot of interrupted meals, showers, and nights of sleep!
So yes, sometimes we do get to enjoy those famous firehouse recliners. But there's a lot of work happening between emergency calls that most people never see.
**And as much as we love what we do, we're always happy when the community doesn't need us.**
Because a quiet day at the firehouse means a good day for Surfside Beach! 🚒
