🍉 Don’t Do It, Donnie – Food Waste Edition! 🍕

Donnie’s got the ball, he’s heading for the blue can and… 🚫 DON’T DO IT, DONNIE!

Food waste does not belong in your recycling can. Leftover food can contaminate otherwise recyclable materials and make them harder—or impossible—to recycle.

♻️ Before you recycle: Empty out food and liquids, and give containers a quick rinse when needed. Food scraps belong in your black trash can, not the blue.

Don’t fumble your recycling like Donnie! 🏈♻️

🔋 Don’t Do It, Donnie – Battery Edition! 🔋

Donnie’s at it again! This time, he’s trying to toss used batteries into his trash and recycling cans.

🚫 Don’t do it, Donnie!

Batteries can spark or ignite when they’re crushed or damaged inside collection trucks and recycling equipment. That can lead to dangerous truck and facility fires, putting our drivers, crews and equipment at risk.

♻️🗑️ The bottom line: Batteries don’t belong in your blue recycling can OR your black trash can.

Instead, City of Surprise residents can safely dispose of batteries through our Household Hazardous Waste collection program. Call Customer Service at 623.222.1920 to schedule a pickup.

🚫 Just because it fits in the recycle can doesn't mean it belongs there!

Some of the most common items we find in recycling that can't be recycled curbside include:

🛍️ Plastic grocery bags
🗑️ Recyclables placed inside a plastic bag
🪢 Garden hoses and extension cords
📦 Styrofoam (foam cups, takeout containers, and packaging)
🍃 Yard waste like grass, leaves, and branches

These items can jam sorting equipment, contaminate loads of recyclables, and slow down the recycling process.

🎆 Don't Do It, Donnie – Fireworks Edition! 🎆

Donnie thought he could toss his used fireworks straight into the trash can... 🚫💥

Don't do it, Donnie!

Every Fourth of July, trash cans catch fire because fireworks weren't disposed of properly. Even if a firework looks like it's finished, it can still contain hot material that may reignite.

✅ The safe way to dispose of fireworks:

Soak all used fireworks in a bucket of water overnight.
Once they're completely soaked, place them in your black trash can.

This extra step can help prevent a dangerous fire.

❌ Don't throw wet paint containers in your trash or recycle can!

Wet paint can create safety and environmental issues when it ends up in collection vehicles or disposal facilities.

✅ If the paint is completely dried into a solid, you can place it in your black trash can.

To dry out paint:
• Leave the lid off in a well-ventilated area
• Wait until the paint is fully solidified
• Mixing in cat litter, sawdust, or a paint hardener can speed up the process.

If you have paint that is still liquid and can't be dried out, schedule a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) pickup for proper disposal.

🎨 Don’t Do It, Donnie – Paint Edition! 🎨

Donnie thought tossing leftover paint into the trash can was no big deal… until the Recycle Referees showed up. 🚫

Liquid paint should never be thrown into the trash or recycling can. Improperly disposed paint can leak out of carts, damage streets, clog storm drains, and harm the environment.

✅ Here’s the right way to dispose of paint:
• Let leftover paint dry out completely until it’s solid, then place it in your black trash can
OR
• Schedule a household hazardous waste pickup for safe disposal
