Virginia Department of Forestry: Fall brings cooler temperatures and colorful fall foliage, but it also brings an increased risk of wildfires due to dry conditions, low humidity and fallen leaves, which act as a ready fuel source.
Now through Nov. 30, use extra caution with any potential ignition sources, especially outdoor fires. Additional guidance on how you can stay safe this fire season can be found on our website: https://ow.ly/Xxah50ZXZ4w

Surry County Family YMCA: Today, we celebrated an important milestone as we broke ground on the new Surry County Family YMCA.

This project is the result of a strong partnership between Surry County and the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, built on a shared vision for the future of the community. Over the past two years, county leaders, staff, elected officials, and YMCA volunteers and team members have worked together with a common purpose: creating new opportunities for the residents of Surry County.

Their commitment, collaboration, and belief in what this YMCA can become, as well as the leadership and willingness to invest in the future of Surry County, helped transform an idea into the milestone we celebrated today.

When completed, this $24 million, 47,000-square-foot YMCA will be far more than a building. It will be a place where children gain confidence, families grow stronger, neighbors build relationships, and people of all ages find connection and belonging.
Today was a celebration of partnership. Tomorrow, we will continue the work together. We are excited to see the lasting impact this investment will have on Surry County for generations to come.

Virginia Department of Emergency Management: 🌎 VIRGINIA, ARE YOU READY TO SHAKE OUT? ⏰
On Thursday, October 15, at 10:15 a.m., Virginians are encouraged to participate in the 2026 Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill!
Whether you're at school, at work, or at home, take a few minutes to practice the actions that could help protect you during an earthquake.
🛑 DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON!
⬇️ DROP to your hands and knees before the shaking knocks you down.
🛡️ COVER your head and neck and, if possible, take shelter under a sturdy desk or table.
✊ HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops.
🏫 Schools, businesses, government agencies, and households across Virginia can participate. Some organizations may also test emergency notification systems during the drill, so be aware of any alerts you may receive.
🌪️ You don't have to live in an earthquake-prone area to be prepared. Practicing now helps build the muscle memory you may need in an emergency.
Virginia, let's make preparedness a habit! Participate in the Great ShakeOut and encourage your family, friends, and coworkers to join you.

Surry County VA Emergency Management: "There is still time to sign up for SKYWARN tomorrow! This is a great opportunity to get involved with your community and providing important data to the National Weather Service."

🌪️ Want to Learn How to Spot Severe Weather? Become a SKYWARN Weather Spotter! ⛈️

When severe weather hits, National Weather Service meteorologists rely on trained SKYWARN Weather Spotters to tell them what’s actually happening on the ground. You can be one of those spotters!

Surry County Emergency Management is hosting a FREE National Weather Service SKYWARN Weather Spotter Training Class on Wednesday, October 14 at 5:00 PM in the General District Courtroom.

You’ll learn how to recognize signs of severe weather, understand what you’re seeing when storms develop, and safely report important conditions to the National Weather Service. Those reports can help meteorologists verify severe weather and provide better information and warnings to our community.

And you don’t have to be a weather expert! Whether you’re a weather enthusiast, first responder, public employee, farmer, outdoor worker, or simply someone who wants to be better prepared when storms threaten, this class is for you.
