Mike. McGuire’s campaign rolled into Janesville yesterday, and the candidate met and talked with residents for nearly two hours Thursday evening.
Organizers expected about a dozen residents to attend the event, but before it even started it was clear the meeting room in the back of the restaurant would not be large enough to contain the crowd, so the event moved out into the restaurant proper.
Of course, McGuire’s main message was, “It’s time we come together and take our country back … It’s time the Democrats stand up and take the fight to Trump.”
He said it’s time to stand up for our constitutional rights, free speech, free elections, raising the minimum wage, increasing access to health care, reforming CalFire, opposing endless wars, opposing tariffs, supporting free community college education for all, making sure corporations and the super wealthy pay their share, repealing the Citizens United Supreme Court and other Supreme Court decisions, reforming the terms of the Supreme Court justices, reforming ICE, finding solutions to the homeless problem and returning control of some matters to the local government and boards of supervisors.
As might be expected, McGuire, a Democrat, hammered home many of the talking points in circulation coming into the midterm elections, at times drawing enthusiastic responses — cheers and applause from dozens of residents — when he followed his statements with a question such as, ‘Are you with me?’
He said he would be honored to be the first Democrat to represent District 1 in Congress in more than 50 years, and that Democrats need to make inroads into the rural areas of California instead of relying on votes from those in the large urban areas.
