Sutter County Initiates Intermittent Fire Station Brownouts Due to Staffing Levels

Sutter County has temporarily browned out Oswald Station 8 (1280 Barry Road, Yuba City) due to low staffing levels, which went into effect at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25. The County developed a plan to rotate brownouts between two Sutter County Fire Department stations until staffing levels allow operations to resume safely.

Brownouts are a last-resort staffing measure necessary to ensure fire personnel can operate safely while maintaining emergency response coverage through other available resources.

Sutter County Fire Department currently has four fire engineer vacancies across its three stations. Five additional team members are currently on leave. This leaves staffing at critically low levels.

“We recognize the importance of maintaining reliable emergency response coverage throughout Sutter County,” said Sutter County Fire Chief Kyle Long. “We have a plan in place to address current staffing challenges. The County is actively recruiting additional personnel and has expedited the interview and hiring process to bring staffing to a level necessary to operate all stations at a capacity that ensures the safety of personnel and the community."

As part of a plan to mitigate service impacts, the County will rotate the brownout between Oswald Station 8 and Sutter Station 6 (2340 California St., Sutter) every 48 hours to provide coverage to rural residents at the highest possible level. During the intermittent brownout, other Sutter County stations are providing primary response. Yuba City Fire and surrounding agencies will provide assistance when available.

Sutter County appreciates the cooperation of its emergency response partners and the community as the department works to maintain the most effective coverage possible while addressing current staffing challenges.

🚨 STATION 8 CLOSURE

Station 8 will be closed today from 5:00 PM until 7:00 AM Thursday due to no available staffing.

During this closure, emergency responses in the Oswald-Tudor area (highlighted in red) will be coming from surrounding stations and mutual aid, resulting in longer response times for our community. This also impacts the areas of Sutter and Live Oak as the department is down an engine company and reduces fire ground operations.

Sutter County Firefighters Local 5032 remains committed to keeping our community informed when staffing impacts emergency services.

When seconds matter, staffing matters.

Today, Sutter County Fire Engine 8, Engine 6 and Sutter 2 responded to a rescue incident on Highway 113 near the Yolo Causeway involving a man trapped beneath a motorhome.
The patient was changing a tire when the RV slipped off its jack stand and pinned him underneath. Engine 8 arrived on scene to find the victim trapped under the vehicle. Thinking quickly and working efficiently, Engine 8 personnel deployed airbag lifting equipment and were able to raise the motorhome and extricate the patient in less than five minutes from their arrival.
The patient was transported by Bi-County Ambulance to Rideout Hospital for further evaluation.
Excellent teamwork and a rapid, coordinated response by all agencies on scene made a significant difference in this incident. Thank you to the California Highway Patrol, Bi-County Ambulance,  Sutter County Sheriff and all responding personnel for their professionalism and collaboration.

This morning at approximately 8:00 a.m., Sutter County Fire responded to a reported rollover traffic collision involving multiple patients.
Upon arrival, the first-arriving engine company declared a Multi-Casualty Incident (MCI) after determining there were five patients involved, including three in critical condition.
One critically injured patient was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center, while another was transported by ground ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center. The remaining patients were transported by ground ambulance to Adventist Health and Rideout Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
This incident required a coordinated response from multiple agencies. Sutter County Fire extends its sincere appreciation to CAL FIRE, Yuba City Fire Department, Bi-County Ambulance, the California Highway Patrol, and the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office for their outstanding teamwork and collaboration. The seamless coordination between all responding agencies helped ensure patients received timely emergency care.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident, and we wish the injured a full and speedy recovery.
