✨️Hyde Highlight: Schools Meet with Faith Leaders✨️
Local Faith Leaders met with Hyde County Schools on October 27th for their regular meeting regarding student, staff, and community needs. During the course of the their meeting, several pressing needs were outlined:
1) School Christmas Sponsors
Mattamuskeet School is asking the community to sponsor a child/family this Christmas. Sponsoring a family makes the holiday even more magical for the kids, while taking some financial pressure off parents and guardians. If you are interested in sponsoring a child/family, please contact Community Schools Coordinator Angie Kerr at [email protected].
Ocracoke School is looking to create another Angel Tree this holiday season, which would provide new clothes and toys to children in need. The student who hosted the Angel Tree last year has since graduated, so Ocracoke School is looking for another student or group of students to take the lead. Once more information is known it will be advertised here. For any additional questions, please contact Guidance Counselor Mary McKnight at [email protected].
2) Community Schools
Mattamuskeet School is looking for volunteers to read to children in K-2 classrooms. Volunteers will undergo a standard background check, and will receive a fifteen minute training on how to engage students in what is being read.
They are also seeking donations for their weekend backpack program, where students in need are sent home bags of easy-to-make foods to support them through the weekend. They send out an average of 100 bags per week. Food and monetary donations are accepted.
Anyone interested in volunteering with these programs can contact Community Schools Coordinator Angie Kerr at [email protected].
3) Pre-K Wishlist
Mattamuskeet School is looking for donations of hats, gloves, scarves, coats, socks, etc. to keep their Pre-K students warm during their mandatory sixty-minute recess. For more information, please contact NC PreK Contract Administrator Tekisha Jordan at [email protected].
