Happy Halloween! When lighting your Jack O'Lantern this year, try flameless alternatives like glow sticks (eerie), battery-powered tea lights (some models even flicker like the real thing), or battery-powered fairy lights (for a neo-bohemian look). Big fires start small, especially under the current weather conditions: don't let a candle fire ruin your Halloween festivities!

This coming weekend we will end daylight saving time. As part of this semi-annual adjustment to clocks, be sure to replace batteries on smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and test your devices. Many newer units have a ten-year service life. If you haven't converted or changed to a newer device, please consider making the switch.

When you change your clocks next weekend, don't forget to check your alarms! Smoke and alarms have the manufacturing date printed on the back. Replace smoke alarms after 10 years and CO alarms after 5, 7, or 10 years depending on the model. If your alarms use alkaline batteries, put fresh ones in to protect yourself and your loved ones all winter long! At approximately 4:30 p.m., Swansea Fire Department crews from Rescue 1 and Engine 4 responded to a report of a vehicle into a residence on GAR Highway.

Upon arrival, crews encountered a pickup truck that had struck the porch and foundation of a home. Firefighters from R1 and E4 immediately went to work conducting technical stabilization, assembling cribbing and vertical shoring to support the compromised porch roof to provide structural integrity.

In recent days, many people have started to use their home heating systems. This is generally the first time the sytem has been called on to produce heat. It is also a reason why this time of year can be the highest volume of heating system fires and other dangerous conditions. Don't forget to check and test your carbon monoxide detectors too!

The nights are getting chillier, and home heating fires tend to rise right around this time of year. Having your heating system professionally checked each year can identify issues before they become emergencies -- and it can help save money, too. Now is a great time to schedule a check-up!
