🚨School Bus Safety🚨

🚌 PLEASE STOP FOR THE BUS! 🚌

Over the past two weeks, our department has received reports of FOUR separate incidents involving motorists passing stopped school buses while the buses were loading or unloading students.

This is EXTREMELY dangerous. When a school bus is stopped with its red warning lights flashing, children may be entering or exiting the bus and may need to cross the roadway.

🚨 Vermont Law under 23 V.S.A. 1075 a driver approaching or overtaking a school bus that has stopped to receive or discharge school children must stop and remain stopped while the bus's flashing red lights are operating. This applies to drivers approaching the bus from EITHER direction, subject to the limited exceptions provided by law for certain divided or controlled-access highways.

Violating Vermont's school-bus stopping law is a serious traffic violation that carries 5 points on the driver's motor vehicle record along with fines up to $1,000.

A few extra seconds are worth it when the safety of a child is at stake.

Parents, students, bus drivers and motorists all have a role in keeping our children safe. Please slow down, pay attention and STOP when the school bus stops.

Four incidents in 2 weeks is four too many!
