WANTED NORTH CAROLINA MAN ARRESTED

On Friday, October 2, 2026, officers and detectives with the Sweetwater Police Department received an alert from Flock Safety’s automated license plate reader system about a vehicle associated with a man wanted in Kings Mountain, North Carolina.

Detectives confirmed with Monroe County E-911 that the warrants were active and fully extraditable. The warrants were for sexual exploitation of a minor, human trafficking, and child abduction.

Detectives remained in contact with the Kings Mountain Police Department, which was working with the U.S. Marshals Service. Officers located the vehicle in the area of Sweetwater-Vonore Road and conducted a felony stop. Mr. Byron Barnes was taken into custody.

This case shows how the tools available to law enforcement, combined with the hard work and determination of our officers and detectives, can help move an investigation forward. We can confirm that the juvenile victim is now safer with the suspect in custody.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Today, the Sweetwater Police Department and Sweetwater Fire Department partnered with administrators and staff at Sweetwater High School to conduct a lockdown safety drill.

We were extremely pleased with the response and grateful for the hard work and dedication shown by the high school administrators and staff. Their preparation, teamwork, and commitment play an important role in keeping our schools safe. We will continue conducting these drills because the safety of our children is our highest priority.

National IT Professionals Day

Today, we’re proud to recognize our City IT Professional, Landon Purdy and thank him for the tremendous job he does for the City of Sweetwater and our department.

His knowledge, dependability, and willingness to help are invaluable to SPD. Whether it’s keeping critical systems running or helping us solve an unexpected issue, he is always there when we need him.

Much of his work happens behind the scenes, but it certainly does not go unnoticed.

25 years later, we remember.

September 11, 2001, changed our nation forever. We remember the innocent lives taken, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the countless acts of courage and compassion that followed.

Here at home, that compassion could be seen on the streets of Sweetwater. One of these photographs captures a Sweetwater citizen collecting donations on Main Street at a red light in the days following the attacks. In all, our community raised $14,384.61.

The other photograph shows former Sergeant Kenny Wilkins near Ground Zero after he, Chief Eddie Byrum, and former Captain Gary Newman traveled to New York — carrying with them the support of a small Tennessee town for a nation in mourning.

From Main Street to Ground Zero, these photographs remind us that although 25 years have passed, September 11 must never become just another page in history.

Remember their names. Remember their sacrifice. Remember how America stood together.

We will NEVER FORGET.

Congratulations to the newest members of the Sweetwater Police Department!

We are proud to congratulate Officer Jarred Wilkins and Officer Steven Truman on becoming our two newest full-time police officers!

Both officers began with SPD in a part-time capacity and have worked their way into full-time positions. They will continue working alongside their Field Training Officers as they gain valuable experience and prepare to attend the police academy.

We’re proud to have them on our team and look forward to watching them grow in their careers serving the citizens of Sweetwater.

Please join us in congratulating Officer Wilkins and Officer Truman and welcoming them to their new roles!

⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER ALERT ⚠️

A strong line of storms is moving east toward our area, with portions of Monroe County potentially in its path.

The National Weather Service reports these storms are capable of producing:

Wind gusts up to 60 MPH
Penny-size hail
Damage to trees, power lines, roofs, and property

Residents in Sweetwater and throughout Monroe County should stay weather aware as these storms move east. Conditions can change quickly, so have a way to receive weather alerts and be prepared to seek shelter if a warning is issued.

We’ll continue monitoring conditions and share updates as necessary. ⛈️
