Yesterday, we had the privilege of officially unveiling a project that will preserve and honor the history of the Sycamore Fire Department for generations to come.
When the new Station 1 was being constructed, an open space in the foyer presented the perfect opportunity to create something truly meaningful: a permanent tribute to the firefighters who have served our community.
In January, we reached out to the shop and STEM instructors at Sycamore High School and Middle School to see if they would be interested in helping bring this vision to life. Both instructors immediately embraced the idea, and what followed became a special collaboration between our schools, students, and firefighters.
Students from both schools dedicated countless hours to this project, meticulously crafting each piece and paying incredible attention to detail. Their pride, creativity, and commitment helped turn an idea into a lasting tribute that will welcome everyone who walks through our station doors.
The Sycamore Firefighters Local 3046 Union unanimously voted to fund this project. Through this tribute, members who have served within the union for three or more years will be honored with a plaque featuring a leather-style helmet shield replica, along with their highest-ranking badge displayed as a permanent reminder of their service and dedication. Every L3046 member since its initiation in 1986 will be represented.
Yesterday, we had the opportunity to recognize the students and instructors who poured their time, talent, and heart into making this project possible.
We are incredibly proud of their work and grateful for the opportunity to partner with our local schools on something that connects generations of Sycamore firefighters. This wall represents more than names and badges. It represents a legacy of service, sacrifice, brotherhood, and commitment to the community we are honored to serve.
A new station. A lasting tribute. A legacy that will live on.
Thank you the Sycamore Community School District 427, the shop and STEM instructors from the Sycamore High School and Sycamore Middle School, and every student who helped make this vision a reality. We look forward to sharing this piece of our history with our community for many years to come.
