A look back at Sylvan Beach history!

From August 8–10, 1975, Sylvan Beach hosted the annual Oneida County Volunteer Firemen’s Convention, bringing thousands of visitors to the village.

The weekend featured “firematics” competitions along the Barge Canal and a massive Saturday afternoon parade, pictured here. The two-hour parade included more than 100 units—representing 57 fire companies, 18 bands, and nine color guards.

The Sylvan Beach fire chief served as chairman of the event, assisted by Assistant Chiefs Ray Umber and Tim Douglas.

A special thank-you to Jack Henke for sharing this incredible photograph and the history behind it!

The memorial services for 3rd Assistant Chief Ryan Voorhies will be this Sunday from 10 am until 1 pm at the Sylvan Beach firehouse. We ask all departments sending apparatus to please be at our station by 9am. We are lining Main St from the traffic light to the bridge with fire apparatus. We will have staff on hand directing apparatus to their parking space. Class A uniforms are suggested but not required. At 1 pm there will be a memorial service by our chaplain followed by the reception. We ask anyone that knew Ryan to please come and share your memories with us. If anybody is interested in donating food please contact firefighter Patrick St. Thomas at 315-525-2847 or message our page. We cannot thank the community enough for their outpouring of love and support during these hard times. Please continue to keep Ryan's wife Katie, son Gabe, son Logan and all of Ryan's family in your thoughts.

Reminder - this event happens tomorrow. We hope to see everyone there.
