Every child in Syracuse deserves to grow up in a lead-free home.

That was the message Monday as the City raised a flag to begin National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.

Common Council President Rita Paniagua spoke about the challenges ahead, the progress already underway, and the Council's responsibility to keep this important work moving forward.

Mayor Sharon Owens also introduced the Lead Big Table, a new effort to bring community partners together to tackle lead hazards across Syracuse.

There's more work to do, but by working together, we can make Syracuse safer for every family.

A Syracuse Northside tradition now has a street sign to match!

Councilor Nave, who represents the 1st District, joined the Lombardi family to celebrate the official designation of “Lombardi’s Way” at the corner of Butternut and Lodi Streets, home of Lombardi’s Import Market.

The family-owned business has called this corner home since 1970, with generations of the Lombardi family helping preserve the neighborhood’s Italian heritage, character, and small business tradition.

Congratulations to the Lombardi family on this well-deserved recognition!

Today, the Syracuse Common Council unanimously voted to revoke the Special Use Permit for The Westcott Theater.

This was not a decision made lightly. Councilors held a public hearing and committee meeting and reviewed dozens of emails from community members before today’s vote.

Councilor Monto noted that the Council ultimately found that The Westcott had failed to comply with the terms and conditions outlined in its Special Use Permit.

Hispanic Heritage Month has officially begun in Syracuse! 🎉

To mark the occasion, the United Nations flag was raised at City Hall under this year’s message, “Juntos Somos Más — Together We Are More,” celebrating the strength, culture, and contributions of Syracuse’s diverse Hispanic and Latino communities.

The celebration also featured a beautiful performance highlighting Ecuadorian culture and traditions.

Hispanic Heritage Month continues through October 15, and we look forward to celebrating the many cultures and communities that help make Syracuse stronger. “Juntos Somos Más!”

Two upcoming Common Council committee meetings will take place in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

On Wednesday, September 16 at 10:30 a.m., the Education, Human Resources & Community Advancement Committee will discuss labor agreements, including the need for livable wages for the City’s CDL drivers.

On Monday, September 21 at 5:30 p.m., the Economic Development & Opportunity Committee will discuss whether the Council should revoke the special use permit for The Westcott.

Please note: Committee meetings typically do not include public comment. Public comment is generally reserved for public hearings. Committee meetings provide Councilors an opportunity to hear from those directly involved in the matter and ask questions before considering next steps.

Today, members of the Syracuse Common Council joined our community at the City’s 9/11 Memorial in Forman Park to honor and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

Together, we observed 17 minutes of silence, marking the time between the two planes striking the Twin Towers.

We remember those we lost, their families, the first responders who answered the call, and all those whose lives were forever changed by the attacks — including those who continue to suffer from their impacts today.

We will never forget.

On Sunday, August 16, the Pakistani flag was proudly raised at Syracuse City Hall in celebration of the 79th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence. 🇵🇰

Common Council President Rita Paniagua and Councilor Chol Majok joined members of Syracuse’s Pakistani community for the celebration, recognizing the important contributions that New Americans from Pakistan and around the world make to our city. Their cultures, traditions, talents, businesses, and families help make Syracuse a more beautiful, vibrant, and stronger community.

Following the flag raising, the celebration continued with food, music, fellowship, and an art exhibit featuring the creativity of children who participated in a special art competition.

We are proud to celebrate Syracuse’s Pakistani community and wish everyone a happy Pakistan Independence Day!
