This year's celebrations begin with tonight's Kickoff Celebration featuring Cleotrapa. The theme for this year is, “Existing Outside the Lines: The Colors of Resistance.” Through a lens of intersectionality as art, this theme encapsulates the rich diversity within the Black community while also acknowledging the spectrum of color that Blackness holds. Night at the Museum | Artist Talk + Reception | February 8 | 7:30pm – 9:30pm EST | Syracuse University Art Museum: Shaffer Art Building | FREE + Open to Community

In honor of Black History Month, Multicultural Affairs (OMA), the Syracuse University Art Museum and the LGBTQ Resource Center at Syracuse University present “Night at the Museum.” Join them for an a exclusive evening featuring an Artist Talk with Rahm Bowen (), a Brooklyn-based painter and Parsons alum whose striking portraits celebrate the diversity and humanity of the African diaspora.

Bowen’s larger-than-life oil and acrylic paintings showcase a lineage of Blackness that is both ancient and futuristic. Color, texture and light are essential elements in his works, offering a window into a rich cultural world.

Following the Artist Talk, there will be a reception where attendees can view Bowen’s work, meet the artist and connect with others in the creative community while enjoying refreshments.

We’re always happy to share the success of ! Today, meet Breana Nieves Vergara (Nottingham High School ’16), who is now Assistant Director of Multicultural Affairs at Syracuse University. After graduating from Ithaca College, where she majored in Sociology with minors in Education Studies and Latinx Studies, Ms. Nieves Vergara pursued a year-long fellowship at On Point For College through the BOLD Women's Leadership Network (a scholarship for women-identifying students at colleges/universities with a woman Chancellor/President). There, she created the first mentorship program for On Point – during the COVID-19 pandemic! She pursued a position as the Coordinator of Mentoring Programs at Syracuse University and was recently promoted to Assistant Director of Multicultural Affairs.

“The coolest thing about my job is working with students of color and connecting them to all of the amazing things both Syracuse University and the City of Syracuse have to offer,” she shared. “My advice to SCSD students is to take advantage of all the amazing opportunities that SCSD has to offer. Take at least one college-level course, through OCC, SUPA, or AP! Explore your interests through clubs, sports, or other extracurricular activities – use your time in SCSD to build community. Utilize your resources, and do not be afraid to ask for help or support; seeking help is a sign of strength!”

Recently, celebrated the grand reopening of 113 Euclid.

The space at 113 Euclid Ave. serves as a “home away from home” for Native students and a gathering place for those who are interested in exploring Native American culture and history.
