Igniting the spirit of community collaboration, giving, and civic engagement to improve lives in CNY

06/02/2026

Get Involved. Make a Difference! Every day this week, we’re taking a look back at last year’s Day of Caring, with segments from Bridge Street on NewsChannel 9. Today, we’re highlighting the incredible volunteers from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield at Syracuse Habitat for Humanity. The team installed flooring in a new construction home, which was nearing completion and would be sold to a family with an affordable, income-based mortgage.

📣Agency Registration NOW OPEN!
The United Way of Central New York's annual Day of Caring returns August 6th! We invite all nonprofits throughout the greater Onondaga County area to post your volunteer needs on www.VolunteerCNY.org, now!

Whether you need help with grounds cleanup, painting, room organizing, food service, or something else entirely, this is your chance to capitalize on the spirit of community giving. Each year, this event grows. Last year, over 1,300 individuals volunteered -- completing over 100 projects -- in a single day! As a result, participating agencies gained lasting corporate partnerships and dedicated, returning volunteers.

If you haven’t joined us before, make this the year you become part of Central New York’s largest community-wide day of volunteering.

When city leadership shows up like this, it proves that building a stronger, more equitable Central New York isn't just work -- it's a team effort (and sometimes, a hilariously messy one!).

This Memorial Day, the team at United Way of Central New York pauses to remember and honor the incredibly brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country and our freedom.

And we’re reminded of our Day of Caring in 2024, when volunteers from SRC, Inc. spent the day at the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, dedicating their time and energy to cleaning, restoring, and honoring the final resting places of our local heroes.

This year, the program has expanded to 4 SCSD schools – providing more than 1,200 students at Dr. King, Dr. Weeks Elementary School, McKinley-Brighton Elementary, and Roberts Pre-K-8 School with a new book (and corresponding family tip sheets to engage with the book content as a family) every month during the school year. to the United Way for this generous support.
