🗞️ Historical Report 📰

Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department — April 13, 1970

Historic Kmart Fire | Mattydale Shopping Plaza
On April 13, 1970, the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department responded to one of the largest fires in the history of the Hinsdale Fire District at the Kmart store located in the well-known Mattydale Shopping Plaza.

The fire required an extensive firefighting effort, with our department and numerous surrounding fire departments working together at the scene over the course of several days.

These historic photographs capture scenes from the fire and show Hinsdale Fire Department Engine No. 3 positioned at the top of the plaza hill. Among those pictured are our very own Past Chief Kenneth Norton, who ran command and Past Chief Frederick Dygert, who operated Engine No. 3 during this major incident.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to our very own Past Chief John Roder and current President for helping us gather information about this historic fire. Through this effort, we were fortunate to learn that Past Chief Roder served as the lieutenant and officer in charge of Engine No. 3 on the day of the fire.

These photographs and the memories shared by our past members help preserve an important chapter in our department's history. We are proud to honor the dedication, teamwork, and service of the firefighters from Hinsdale and the surrounding departments who answered the call.

Remembering the people, preserving the history, honoring the service. 🚒

Recently, the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department sent one of our newest patches to the The Clark Burn Center at Upstate , located at Upstate University Hospital downtown. Our members are honored to have our patch displayed on the board alongside patches from many other fire departments and agencies from across the county and state.

It’s a small gesture, but it represents the pride, dedication, and commitment of our volunteers and the community we serve
