Connections are made every day on the Habitat construction sites, but this connection happened to uncover something deeper–a shared family history.

Kathleen is a grandmother who works graveyard shifts in the Amazon accounting department. She lives with her daughter, Barbara, and spends her days caring for her two adorable and energetic grandchildren. They were living in an apartment until the rent increased, pricing Kathleen and her family out. Kathleen’s other daughter, Krystal, suggested they explore Habitat homeownership.

meet Denny

Denny is a 79-year-old Army Veteran who has lived in his home for 12 years. When his leaky metal roof began causing damage to his ceiling, Denny’s case manager reached out to Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity.

Denny was drafted during the Vietnam War and spent a year and a half in Germany in the late 1960s. After his service, Denny had a long career working in aerospace both at Boeing and for an airplane parts manufacturer in Kent.

With assistance from a Home Depot Foundation Repair Corps grant, Tacoma Habitat’s Aging in Place program was able to work with a contractor to clean and repair Denny’s roof and apply a new silicone coating that stopped the existing leaks and will prevent new ones.

He is grateful for the help from Habitat’s Aging in Place program and the Home Depot Foundation and hopes that sharing his story will help other Veterans receive assistance.

Meet Habitat Homeowner Kyle!

Kyle, a single father of two wonderful children, was searching for a place they could truly call home. Through a friend who worked as a mortgage lender, he was connected to Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity. That connection led him to a realtor who encouraged him to apply for a Tacoma Habitat renovated home that had been listed on the MLS.

"I knew right away that it was the right house for us," Kyle said.

After applying and being accepted into the Homeownership Program, Kyle began completing his sweat equity hours alongside his daughter. Together, they volunteered during Habitat's "demo days" for renovated homes, helping remove old interior finishes and prepare the properties for renovation. The experience gave them the opportunity to work side by side while contributing to the creation of affordable housing for future homeowners.
