QUÉ LINDO: Enjoy a musical sendoff to Hispanic Heritage Month courtesy of the talented third grade singers of Arlington Elementary led by music teacher, Deryl Harter. Students learned this beautiful song in honor of Día de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead) as part of their first semester focus on global holidays. Next up: they're practicing a new song in honor of Diwali, building toward a celebratory cultural concert in January. 🎶

Generations of Lowell families came together Tuesday to celebrate a new chapter for their school community. 💙💛

During the open house, students, families and alumni explored the new school while discovering pieces of Lowell's history throughout the building, including benches, artwork and other treasures from earlier versions of the school.

Designed by local partners BCRA and built by Korsmo Construction, the three-story school features learning spaces inspired by water, mountains and sky, along with a covered play area, a library with views of Puget Sound and a soccer mini-pitch donated by the RAVE Foundation.

Made possible by the 2020 voter-approved school construction bond, the new school will serve Tacoma students for generations to come.

Builder of confidence, writer of songs…and one “rad dude.” Meet Deryl Harter, the Arlington Elementary music teacher who leads the school-wide morning meeting with the intention of helping the student body set the tone for their day.

To kick it off, Harter warmly greets students as they walk in the door. The kids know what to expect – and they know what to do. They line up with their class, check in with friends and listen to morning announcements. Then, the best part. He selects a student to sing the school song, and eventually the student body joins in, belting out the lyrics with confidence. It’s a small act with a big impact.

“Mr. Harter helps build safety and risk-taking for student musically - when it can be a vulnerable place to share,” said principal Marissa Cabading. “It’s such an important skill and plays so directly into our culture and climate of how kids support one another.”

With this sense of belonging renewed each morning, Arlington students set off to start their school day.

Thank you, Mr. Harter. You are a student-centered advocate who prioritizes the need of every student!

Seven days, new friends, and memories to last a lifetime!

Last week, Hunt Middle School hosted students and educators from Wuhan, China. From choreographed dances and pickleball to sharing music and traditional Chinese art, students from both schools built lasting connections and discovered just how much they have in common.

“These experiences bring global learning to life,” said Principal Ruth Schlattman. “Students are building curiosity, empathy and respect for others.”

We’re grateful for opportunities like this to grow international friendships and can’t wait to see these bonds continue!
