24 businesses and organizations joined us yesterday for the first session of our Domestic Violence and the Workplace webinar series.

One of the most powerful reminders from the session:
"What we see is only the tip of the iceberg."

While many people think of domestic violence as physical violence, attendees learned how emotional abuse, isolation, intimidation, and economic abuse are often used to maintain power and control, affecting every aspect of a survivor's life, including their ability to work and maintain financial stability.

Another key takeaway:
"If you have a team of over three people, you probably have somebody who has either experienced this or has been close to somebody who's experienced domestic violence."

That's why this conversation matters for employers.

Thank you to the experts from Crystal Judson Family Justice Center, Our Sisters' House, and YWCA Pierce County for sharing their expertise and helping employers better understand the realities of domestic violence and its impact on our workplaces and communities.

Join us next week for Session 2, where we'll take a deeper dive into:
▶️ What should you do if an employee discloses domestic violence?
▶️ How can you support survivors while maintaining workplace safety?
▶️ What leave and workplace accommodations are available?
▶️ How can managers and HR professionals respond with confidence?

At our September Taskforce meeting, 12 organizations came together to address a growing community need: more than 14,000 young adults in Pierce County are not connected to work or school.

Each organization shared what it has learned through its work and from the young adults it serves. Together, partners brought key barriers to light, including housing instability, limited transportation, unclear service paths, and disconnected referrals.

The discussion made one need clear: young adults need a connected experience, not a list of disconnected programs. Partners turned that insight into three practical commitments:
✅ strengthening warm handoffs between organizations
✅ creating more connected pathways to education and employment
✅ building one new partnership in the next 90 days that makes it easier for young adults to access the support they need.

At our next meeting, partners will report back on what happened when they put these commitments into practice.

That is what the Taskforce is designed to support: bringing the right people to the table to examine how our systems work, identify the barriers, and build solutions together.

The field trip that inspired you. The teacher who encouraged you. The local boards and leaders who helped shape career pathways. The boss who then hired you. The ongoing growth and success. The worksite tour you later gave to a field trip of inspired young people = workforce development.

Within each of our 12 local workforce development areas across Washington, millions of people are dedicating their lives to helping others find and secure sustainable employment and build successful, thriving communities. “Workforce development” might not be a phrase we all use every day, but workforce development is what many of us actually do every day. If you have a job or are enrolled in school, if you help people get connected to resources or run a business of your own, guess what? You’re in workforce development too!

Shout out to all 12 of our hardworking and dedicated local workforce boards and their teams. Washington State is an incredible place to live and work because of how you help grow and shape our workforce. Thank you for all you do.

The sharp spike in disconnection from work and school between ages 19 to 21 highlights the years immediately after high school as a critical transition period.

These findings suggest that investments in transition-age supports (including dual enrollment, bridge programs, internships, work experiences, and career exploration) may have the greatest impact on helping young adults stay connected to education and employment pathways.

Why do disconnection rates peak between ages 19 and 21?
