Do not be alarmed if you see a large emergency response near the Lakewood Rail Yard (Lakewood Ave SW, 100th St SW, and Steilacoom Blvd SW) and West Pierce Fire & Rescue Station 21 on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Multiple agencies including Sound Transit, West Pierce Fire & Rescue, the Lakewood Police Department, South Sound 911, and neighboring fire departments will be participating in a large-scale training exercise throughout the day.

Community members may notice an increased presence of first responders and emergency vehicles around the Lakewood Rail Yard.

This is only a drill. There is no emergency or threat to the public. Please do not call 911 to report activity related to this training exercise. If you are experiencing or witnessing an actual emergency, call 911.

These exercises help ensure our crews are prepared to respond when real emergencies happen. Please be mindful and avoid gathering near the training sites or obstructing emergency vehicles and personnel.

Thank you for your understanding!

Who participated in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill today?! 🙋‍♀️🌎🫨

West Pierce Fire & Rescue had lots of fun being part of the world’s largest earthquake drill for another year.

According to the Washington Department of Natural Resources, earthquakes occur daily in Washington. In fact, the U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 2.7 magnitude earthquake just this morning six miles from North Bend.

Out of all 50 states, Washington has one of the highest risk of large and damaging earthquakes! It’s imperative you and your family know how to DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON.

If you missed the Great ShakeOut this morning, take a moment to practice. Earthquake preparedness doesn’t end when the drill does.

10/14/2026

Join us TOMORROW for the World’s Largest Earthquake Drill: THE GREAT SHAKEOUT. 🌎

At 10:15am on 10/15, join millions of people across the country practicing earthquake safety.

Simply remember to DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON!

⬇️ DROP to your hands and knees
🙆‍♀️ COVER your head and neck under a sturdy desk or table
🫨 HOLD ON until the shaking stops

An earthquake can happen at any time in any environment. This video shows some examples of what to do if you’re at work/school, in bed, outside, or driving.

Video of a lithium-ion battery-related fire that happened last month in University Place 🔥

A lithium-ion battery fire is different than an average fire. This video breaks down how the fire works, and the additional risks that come with it.

E-bikes and electric scooters are more popular than ever. Lithium-ion batteries are usually the source of power for both, and if something goes wrong, the batteries can catch fire or explode.

Here are some tips to follow:

🚲 Only purchase and use devices, batteries, and charging equipment listed by a nationally recognized testing lab and labeled accordingly.

🛴 Store e-bikes, e-scooters, and batteries away from exit doors and anything that can get hot or catch fire.

🔥 Stop using the e-bike or scooter if you notice any of these problems with the battery: unusual noises, unusual odor, change in color, too much heat, change in shape, leaking, smoking, or not keeping a charge.

‼️ If you see smoke or a fire, CALL 911.

Tomorrow is the last day of Fire Prevention Week! Our mission is to CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY by focusing on the everyday charging habits that can reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires. 🔋

You shouldn’t throw away lithium-ion batteries. So what is the right way to dispose of them?

Look for a battery drop-off location near you!

1️⃣ Visit www.batterynetwork.org.

2️⃣ Enter your zip code.

3️⃣ Select what type of battery you’ll be recycling. Locations accept different battery types.

4️⃣ Look at the map for a list of locations near you!

Before dropping off the battery, make sure they are stored safely. The amount of risk varies depending on the type of battery and other factors.

🔋 Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on the best/safest way to store batteries and follow their guidance.

🔋 Batteries should not be exposed to extreme temperatures.

🔋 Keep batteries away from direct sunlight.

🔋 The EPA recommends placing each battery or device containing a battery in a separate plastic bag. Place electrical tape over the battery’s terminals.

🔋 If the lithium-ion battery is damaged, contact the device manufacturer for specific handling instructions.

This week is Fire Prevention Week, and our mission is to CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY by focusing on the everyday charging habits that can reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.

Check back with us tomorrow for the final video of the educational series! We’ll be talking about e-bikes and showing you another video of a lithium-ion related fire that happened in our community just last month! 😲
