About 70 a day. That's the average number of thefts from vehicles reported in Washington state in 2025 according to the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs.

A few simple habits can help prevent vehicle prowls. Before you walk away from your car:

- Remove valuables and keep items out of sight.
- Park in a well-lit area.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended while it's running.
- Roll up your windows and lock your doors.

For a vehicle prowl in progress, call 911. To report a vehicle prowl that is not in progress, call our non-emergency number at 253-287-4455 or file a report online at southsound911.org/report.

Heading out for a run, walk, hike, or bike ride? As fall brings shorter days and earlier sunsets, make knowing your location part of your outdoor routine. Pay attention to trail signs, landmarks, and access points so you can share your location in an emergency.

When calling 911, be ready to provide:

• The exact address, if you know it, or the closest location you can identify
• The name of the park, trail, or trailhead
• Nearby landmarks or businesses
• Major cross streets
• The best way for responders to reach you

We know these moments can be stressful, but answering questions does not delay help. It helps us get the right resources to you faster.

Your address says Tacoma. So Tacoma Police is your police agency... right?

Maybe! Pierce County has 23 incorporated cities and towns, along with many communities outside city limits. The city in your mailing address doesn’t always match the city limits where you live. Some addresses that say “Tacoma” are actually in unincorporated Pierce County, where the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement services.

Why should you know? It can help you find the right place to file an online police report, follow up on an incident, request records or ask about local permits and rules. The key is where you live, or where an incident happened, not just the city name in your mailing address.

In an emergency, sharing your address or location is critical. Yon don't need to know which agency serves that location—we'll take care of that part.
