Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision Under Investigation in South Hill

On October 12, 2026, at approximately 11:10 p.m., Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a fatal two-vehicle collision at the intersection of 134th Avenue East and 144th Street East in the South Hill area.

The collision involved two vehicles in a T-bone-style crash. The Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit responded to assist with the investigation.

Preliminary findings indicate that speed may have been a contributing factor. Investigators believe one vehicle was traveling southbound on 134th Avenue East at a high rate of speed as it approached the stop sign at 144th Street East. A second vehicle was traveling westbound on 144th Street East and had the right-of-way. The southbound vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign and was struck by the westbound vehicle.

The 29-year-old male driver of the southbound vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 22-year-old male driver of the westbound vehicle was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No arrests have been made. Investigators determined impairment was not a factor for the 22-year-old driver.

This remains an active investigation.

Drive-By Shooting Leads to Crash With Patrol Vehicle, Two Arrested

On October 9, 2026, around 10:20 p.m., a sergeant was driving through the intersection of 160th St. E and Meridian when a silver SUV, reportedly involved in a drive-by shooting seconds earlier, ran a red light and struck the patrol vehicle.

The SUV fled southbound on Meridian, turning the incident into a hit-and-run and vehicular assault investigation. The sergeant attempted to catch up to the fleeing vehicle, but the patrol vehicle became disabled due to the collision.

A few minutes later, deputies received information that the SUV had pulled into the Fred Meyer parking lot near 176th St. E and Meridian, and the suspects were reportedly inside the store.

As deputies developed a plan to contact the suspects, two males matching their descriptions walked out of the store. Both were taken into custody. Deputies identified one as the driver and the other as the passenger, who had a loaded fi***rm in his waistband.

The 22-year-old driver was arrested on the following charges:

Hit-and-Run Attended Vehicle
Driving While License Suspended in the Second Degree
Vehicular Assault
Attempting to Elude a Police Vehicle
Driving Under the Influence
Drive-By Shooting
Outstanding Warrants

The 22-year-old passenger was arrested for:

Unlawful Possession of a Fi***rm in the First Degree
Drive-By Shooting

A search warrant of the SUV led to the discovery of an open container of tequila and spent shell casings.

The following day, on October 10, K9 Smokey and his handler conducted a K9 track to locate fi***rm parts after investigators received additional information that the driver had thrown a gun out the window shortly after the collision.

K9 Smokey located a weapon-mounted light in the 16200 block of Meridian. A matching gun slide was also located by a community member who called 911 to report the discovery. Investigators confirmed the fi***rm was stolen.

Thank you to K9 Smokey, his handler, and the community member whose 911 call helped investigators locate additional evidence.
This remains an ongoing investigation.

Remembering Deputy Ken Moran

On a Friday morning in October 1978, Pierce County Deputy Ken Moran was sitting inside a local fire station, visiting with his friends from the fire department while completing his final report.

Then, a call came over the radio.

An armed bank robbery had just occurred nearby in Parkland, and a Washington State Patrol trooper had spotted the suspects’ fleeing vehicle. As Deputy Moran rushed to his patrol car, another radio update came through: the suspects were firing shots at the trooper.
The suspects abandoned their vehicle in a church parking lot, fled across a pasture, and ran into a nearby residential neighborhood.
When Deputy Moran arrived, the suspects began firing multiple rounds toward him and the surrounding homes. As the gunfire continued, a woman stepped out of her home and began walking toward Deputy Moran, despite his repeated commands for her to stop and get down.

Knowing she was in danger, Deputy Moran made the courageous decision to leave his position of cover and run toward her, placing himself between the innocent woman and the gunfire.

Deputy Moran was struck by a gunshot. He was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Eight suspects were ultimately convicted of murder and robbery charges.

Deputy Ken Moran was just 30 years old, a Vietnam War veteran, a husband, and a father to two young sons. He had served as a deputy sheriff for only two years.

His loss left a lasting impact on the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, our deputies, and their families. But Deputy Moran’s legacy did not end that October morning.

In the years following his death, the Ken Moran Scholarship Fund was established in his memory to support the families and futures of those who serve our community. That fund has since grown and evolved into the Pierce County Sheriffs Memorial Scholarship Fund, a lasting tribute that continues the legacy of service and sacrifice represented by Deputy Moran and others who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Today, we remember Deputy Ken Moran, not only for the way he gave his life protecting others, but for the legacy he left behind.

We remember his courage.
We honor his sacrifice.
And we will never forget.

Over the Weekend 10-5-26

#1 DUI Pursuit, Stolen Gun, Drugs, What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

On October 3 around 11 p.m., one of our deputies spotted a vehicle traveling more than 100 mph and running red lights on Canyon Road E. The deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop, leading to a pursuit.

With the vehicle traveling at dangerous speeds, deputies knew they needed to get it slowed down before someone was seriously hurt.
Stop sticks were successfully deployed, deflating two of the vehicle’s tires.

Once the speeds were reduced to a safer level, deputies attempted to box the vehicle in. The driver still wasn’t ready to give up and tried to escape. Rather than let the vehicle get away, a deputy was able to pin it against a curb, bringing the pursuit to an end.

The 38-year-old male driver was arrested, and the vehicle was impounded pending a search warrant. During the search, deputies located a stolen pistol, suspected drugs, and drug paraphernalia.

The suspect is facing charges including:

• Eluding
• Assault in the 2nd Degree
• Reckless Driving
• Unlawful Possession of a Fi***rm in the 1st Degree
• Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver
• Possession of a Stolen Gun
• DUI
• Driving While License Suspended in the 3rd Degree

#2 Towing Motorhome Disaster

On October 2 around 10 a.m., deputies responded to the QFC parking lot near 112th Street S and Pacific Avenue S for a report of a motorhome that had collided with another vehicle. The motorhome was being towed through the parking lot using a tow strap when the strap broke, causing the motorhome to collide with another vehicle.

The female who was steering the motorhome got out and fled the scene on foot, while the male who had been towing it remained at the scene. The 46-year-old male was arrested for Driving While License Suspended in the 1st Degree and Driving Without a Required Ignition Interlock Device. The investigation remains active as deputies work to identify and locate the female involved in the hit-and-run.

A Prickly Situation

One way to try and prevent capture from deputies is to run into the thickest patch of blackberry bushes you can find. It later turned out to be a really bad idea.

On September 30, 2026, around 10:30 p.m., deputies were called to a home after two roommates got into an altercation and one of the women reportedly threatened the other with a knife. Probable cause was established for felony harassment.

Deputies learned the female had fled out the back door with a male, and they could hear movement and branches breaking in the nearby woods. Deputies set up containment around the wooded area while waiting for K9.

When K9 Clark and his handler arrived, the male immediately announced that he was giving up. There was just one problem…

He couldn't get out.

The male had managed to make his way deep into a thick patch of blackberry bushes and was unable to get himself back out. After nearly 30 minutes of trying to navigate the sticker bushes, what started as an arrest quickly turned into a rescue operation, and Fire was called in to help.

While deputies and Fire worked on getting the male out, deputies located the female hiding behind a tree not far from where the male was stuck. The 38-year-old woman was taken into custody for felony harassment and vandalism to the home.

Meanwhile, Fire crews came to the rescue. A long ladder was placed across the top of the blackberry bushes, creating a makeshift path that allowed the male to safely get out.

The male was not arrested after deputies later determined there was no probable cause for his arrest.
