For October's Ready in a Year planning, we focus on earthquake safety.

If the ground starts shaking, and you suspect an earthquake, remember to:
⬇️ Drop to the floor.
🙆🏻‍♀️ Cover your head by getting under a table or using your arm.
🤚🏽 Hold on until the shaking stops.

If you use a mobility aid such as a a cane, walker, or wheelchair, remember to lock those wheels so it doesn't start rolling. If you cannot get under cover, try to protect your head with whatever is within reach.

Now that you’ve practiced what to do during an earthquake (drop, cover, and hold on), remember to sign up for Tacoma Ale...

When charging your lithium-ion-powered devices, these are important tips to follow:

🚲 Charge items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging.

🔌 Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

💻 Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor.

🥵 Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

🔋 Unplug your device when it is fully charged.

✈️ When on a plane, keep devices where you can see them while charging. Do not charge e-cigarettes or vapes on the plane. Tell a flight attendant if you notice a problem with your device.

This week is Fire Prevention Week, and this year, we’re focusing on lithium-ion battery safety.

🔋 These rechargeable batteries power so many everyday devices: phones, laptops, tablets, e-bikes and scooters, toys, power tools, lights, cars, and so much more.

🏡 We recommend looking around your home and figuring out what devices you have that use these batteries. Next we’ll talk about charging them correctly!

What does it take to rescue someone from a bridge or ravine? What about workers at a utility or construction site?

It takes a lot of training and teamwork!

Last week, Tacoma Fire Department, West Pierce Fire & Rescue, and Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One practiced the specialized skills required to rescue someone who is in a tough-to-reach place.

Training in these real-world environments helps our crews experience the unique challenges they may face when someone is injured or trapped, and it gives crews a chance to work through those challenges before an emergency happens.

We don’t do it alone, though. Our community partners open their facilities to us, share their expertise, and help us understand what they would need from us in an emergency.

Those partnerships mean more realistic training opportunities for our crews to respond more effectively and efficiently when we’re called to help.

Engine 11 enjoyed its formal Push-In ceremony today after being in-service for the last two weeks. Tacoma Fire was able to purchase it with emergency funding from City Council.

The previous Engine 11 was running on its second motor and its second pump, and it was in dire need of replacement. In fact, we were unable to do the traditional “wetting of the wheels” on the new engine today because the old engine’s pump broke down again and was unable to pump water.

🏡 Engine 11 serves the McKinley Hill neighborhood.

🚒 OLD engine 11:
Ran over 62,000 calls
In service since late 2011
1500 GPM
350 gallon tank
55 foot aerial ladder

🚒 NEW engine 11:
In service September 18, 2026 at 3:30pm
1500 GPM
500 gallon tank

🤔 Fun fact: Our new engine was destined for another department, but that department had to cancel their order. Since the engine was already in production, TFD was able to receive this engine within a year (that’s fast). This engine is unique because it wasn’t manufactured to our typical specifications, but our TFD garage mechanics worked hard to modify it for Tacoma’s specific needs. They made sure all of TFD’s equipment would fit while installing all of the usual things.
