🇺🇸Brent Swadley, Who Asked Kevin Stitt to Intervene, Avoids Prison After Fraud Conviction
Oklahoma businessman Brent Swadley will not serve any additional prison time despite being convicted of defrauding Oklahoma taxpayers in a multimillion-dollar state contract scandal involving restaurants at state parks.
On Thursday, October 22, Oklahoma County District Judge Cindy Truong gave Swadley a six-year suspended sentence. He must pay $1.2 million in restitution and $50,000 in fines. The jury had recommended 10 years in prison.
Swadley’s restaurant company received approximately $16.7 million from the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department under a contract awarded during Gov. Kevin Stitt’s administration. Investigators found that Swadley submitted fraudulent invoices and inflated equipment costs to collect taxpayer money.
Swadley previously claimed that Stitt personally contacted him about operating restaurants at Oklahoma state parks. Stitt denied knowing Swadley or having any involvement in the contract.
Following his conviction in May, recorded jailhouse phone calls revealed that Swadley wanted Stitt to intervene on his behalf.
“The only person that can help me is the governor,” Swadley told his wife during a May 30 phone call.
Swadley also told his publicist that he had worked with Stitt more than other politicians. Stitt’s office denied that the governor had met with Swadley or members of his team about the case. There is no evidence that Stitt influenced the judge’s sentencing decision.
Swadley was convicted of six felony counts, including conspiracy to defraud the state and submitting fraudulent claims. Despite the jury’s recommendation, he will remain out of prison provided he complies with the conditions of his suspended sentence.
