We were sad the parade was canceled and we could not march today with our new Rent Stabilization banner! Important upcoming Takoma Park City Council topics:
1) July 8, Rent Stabilization. (Don't Weaken it)
2) July 15, Discussion of Four-Year Council Terms. (Weigh in)
3) July 15, Resolution "Committing to Respectful, Constructive, and Dignified Discourse." (Sure! Signs & clapping are respectful.)

Do not weaken our rent stabilization! Great turn out at this week's City Council meeting, where CVT folks were joined by MoCoDSA, CASA, Renters Alliance, tenants, homeowners, and even a landlord giving two hours of testimony on the importance of our strong and historic rent stabilization. Nevertheless, the Mayor signaled she is open to weakening it. So if you missed this week, come to City Council on June 24th, ahead of the Council work session on this topic that night, and say your three minutes.

Announcement that after a year of waiting, the city will NOT release the audit on the sexual harassment case in our police department. The people demanded, and paid for, this external audit. So, we're still waiting for transparency and accountability for the management of what happened here. Release the audit.

UPDATE: Tonight's hearing is POSTPONED due to storms. Stay tuned for a rescheduled date.

The only public hearing on the plan to double the City Council term lengths from two years to four years will be held next MONDAY night at 6:30pm. Two days later, City Council plans to vote on a resolution to change the City Charter to double term lengths. This will go into effect unless residents gather thousands of petition signatures to get a referendum on this issue onto the ballot. So turn out Monday night to weigh in.

Our city's historic rent stabilization law, which helps keep rents affordable, is now being reviewed by City Council.
Unfortunately, the review process opens the door to weakening the law for renters. Sign this petition to urge the Council to continue to prioritize tenant rights, and continue to limit allowable annual rent increases to no more than the rate of inflation. (Link to petition in comments).
