ABLE United Save for a better life experience with ABLE United. In July 2015, the State of Florida created Florida ABLE, Inc.

Working and have an ABLE United account? You may be able to save more.

ABLE to Work allows eligible account holders to contribute beyond the standard annual ABLE limit using earned income. In 2026, that could mean up to an additional $15,650 in contributions, or your earned income for the year, whichever is less.

To qualify, you must be earning income and not participating in an employer-sponsored retirement plan.

This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we’re sharing one way eligible ABLE United account holders can make their earnings go further.

What’s the ACTUAL difference between a special needs trust and an ABLE account?

An ABLE account is designed for everyday spending and saving, giving the beneficiary or caregiver more direct control and allowing funds to grow tax-free for qualified disability expenses. It’s also fast and free to set up, making it easier to start saving right away.

A special needs trust, on the other hand, is managed by a trustee, may have setup and trustee fees, and is often used for larger, long-term planning needs with taxable earnings.

The good news is. you don’t have to choose just one! Many families use an ABLE account alongside a special needs trust to cover day-to-day costs while also planning for the future.

"He saved enough to buy his own car, all while keeping the benefits he depends on."

Meet Bridget and Shaun Hawk, two of our ABLE United ambassadors. Bridget is also the Special Olympics Florida director for Leon County, and as Shaun's mom, she's seen firsthand what the right resources can do for a family.

"Without an ABLE account, he would have been limited by the asset restrictions that come with receiving disability benefits and would not have been able to save beyond the typical $2,000 limit," Bridget shares. Because Shaun could safely save in his ABLE United account, he worked toward a goal that felt out of reach and bought a car, gaining a new level of independence.

The account has also made it possible to plan ahead for future expenses, and it's given family and friends a way to contribute toward Shaun's goals too.

Bridget's advice? Don't wait. Whether you're saving for transportation, education, housing, or whatever comes next, ABLE United offers the flexibility and peace of mind every family deserves.

You have an ABLE United account…now what?

Your ABLE account can help in more ways than you might think. Think of it as both a spending and savings account you can use for a wide range of everyday expenses that support your quality of life.

Start by putting it to work. Setting up automatic contributions, even as little as $5 a month can help your savings grow over time with consistency.

Then, make sure you’re using your funds when you need them. Accessing your money is simple: transfer it to your bank account, request a check to yourself or someone else, or use an ABLE United Prepaid Visa Card for everyday purchases.

ABLE funds can be used for a wide range of qualified disability expenses, anything that helps improve quality of life. That could include housing, transportation, education, assistive technology, or even a vacation.

Many people use their account for both saving and spending: building toward future goals while covering important needs right now. Your ABLE United account isn’t just something to set and forget, it’s a tool you can actively use to support your life today and plan for tomorrow.
