Tonight began the first night of training for our newest CERT members. CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is a program that trains citizens to be prepared for and respond to emergencies that may arise in their community.
 
In the event of a major disaster such as a hurricane, emergency service resources can initially become inundated leaving citizens on their own. CERT training enables citizens to help themselves and their neighbors by applying basic response and organizational skills during an emergency.

As National Preparedness Month comes to a close, we’re introducing someone who helps Tampa prepare year-round: Kaci Thomas, our newest emergency planner!

Kaci joined Tampa Fire Rescue last month after five years with FEMA, where she supported responses to COVID-19 and Hurricanes Ian, Helene and Milton. She also served as an AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps team leader and holds a degree in supply chain management from the University of Kansas.

Preparedness takes people working together long before an emergency happens. We’re glad Kaci is part of the team. Please join us in welcoming her!

Preparedness takes partnership.

For National Preparedness Month, our Emergency Management team visited the National Weather Service Tampa Bay office in Ruskin to learn more about the people and tools behind the forecasts we rely on.

Working closely with meteorologists helps us understand changing conditions, plan ahead and share timely information with our community. That coordination matters during hurricanes, severe storms, flooding and other weather emergencies.
We’re grateful to the National Weather Service team for welcoming us and for the work they do every day to help keep Tampa informed and prepared.

When disaster strikes, neighbors are often the first to help neighbors. Tampa’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training gives residents the skills and confidence to safely support their families, neighborhoods and community during an emergency.

Participants learn about disaster preparedness, fire safety, basic first aid, light search and rescue, team organization and more.

This fall, classes are moving to THURSDAY nights!
