NO SUDS: You know eating fruits and veggies is healthy, but are you washing those berries and broccoli spears? Cooking food kills germs, but thoroughly rinsing produce removes pesticides, chemicals, and heavy metals. That step, plus wiping produce down with a clean cloth/paper towel, has been shown to reduce any hidden chemical load by a lot. No need for disinfectants or even soap.

Children’s bodies are rapidly developing so need both the nutrients in fruits and vegetables AND protection from pesticide residues. Buying organic produce is a good (though costly) way to reduce exposure, but we still recommend you wash all produce.

Suspect an acute poisoning? Call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222 right away. Interested in more information about reducing pesticide exposure? Visit the National Pesticide Information Center https://npic.orst.edu/faq/fruitwash.html or call 1-800-858-7378, M-F

🚨 FOOD RECALL ALERT 🚨

Champion Foods has recalled select batches of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread due to a potential Salmonella contamination risk. The product was sold nationwide at major retailers like Costco, Walmart, Target, Publix, Kroger, and more.

This recall is linked to the broader California Dairies, Inc. milk powder recall, which was issued over concerns of possible Salmonella contamination in certain milk powder ingredients used by multiple manufacturers — including the cheese bread involved in this notice.

If you have this item in your freezer, don’t eat it. Throw it away or return it to the store for a refund. Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach cramps — and symptoms can be more severe in kids, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

📞 If you think you may have been exposed, contact Poison Control at 1 800 222 1222 for immediate help.

Stay safe and check your freezers. 🧊✨

👪 Squishy toys may look harmless, but Florida Poison Control Centers are seeing an increase in calls involving injuries and exposures linked to these popular sensory toys.

Many squishy toys contain foam, gel, water beads, or maltose-based fillings that can become dangerous if the toy is chewed, punctured, or heated. Some products may even smell or taste sweet, increasing the risk that young children will bite or swallow the contents. Online challenges and dares encouraging kids to eat pieces of these toys are also contributing to recent exposures.

⚠️ Important safety reminders for parents and caregivers:
• Never allow squishy toys to be microwaved or heated
• Do not allow children to bite, chew, or puncture them
• Discard any toy that becomes broken or starts leaking
• Keep toys away from pets
• Wash hands after handling leaking contents
• Squishy toys are not recommended for children under 3

Recently, children have suffered serious burn injuries after attempting online “microwave challenges” involving squishy toys. Heating these products can cause them to rupture, melt, or superheat unexpectedly.

🎥 Watch this important message to learn how to keep your family safe.
If your child is exposed, injured, or swallows any toy contents, call the Poison Help line immediately at 1 800 222 1222. Expert help is available 24/7.

BYE-BYE-BYE: You know handwashing kills germs, but did you know it also rinses away harmful chemicals? Regular handwashing with mild soap and water reduces our bodies' long-term burden of pesticides, chemicals, flame retardants and heavy metals.

Chemical residues from manufacturing/processing are present in trace amounts on items we handle every day. Children are more likely than adults to put dirty hands in their mouths. They’re also more developmentally vulnerable to environmental toxins.

While limiting the presence of chemicals in products is ideal, routine handwashing is a good habit to start (or maintain), especially in homes with small children.

Suspect an acute poisoning? Call 1-800-222-1222 right away. Interested in more information about environmental health? Visit https://pehsu.net/childrens-environmental-health/.
