Good luck, Gronk!

It’s hard to believe six years have flown by since Gronk was born at ZooTampa. From following the pairing of Gronk’s parents, Jamie and Johnny, on Secrets of the Zoo: Tampa, to watching him chat with his namesake, four-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski, and seeing his personality flourish as he grew, Gronk has had a significant impact at ZooTampa and in the Tampa Bay community.

Now that Gronk is older, it’s time for him to move to San Diego Zoo Safari Park, where he will continue to support his species, the Greater One-Horned Rhino. Gronk is now settling in California after his journey across the country, and over the past few days, he has started interacting more with his new care team, resting in his wallow, and playing.

Chris, our Chief Zoological Officer, and Angela, our Curator of Asia and Australia, have been with Gronk every step of his journey. Listen in with Chris and Angela as they share how much Gronk’s time at the Zoo meant to us!

Nyala family photo!
Daphne, the Nyala calf born this past May, is now around four months old. Still under the watchful eye of her mom, Macey, Daphne can be found in the mixed species habitat along the Africa walking path and Expedition Wild Africa! Daphne is still easy to tell apart from her parents, Barry and Macey, with her much smaller size.
Nyala appearances also differ significantly between male and female! females are smaller, reddish in color, and have white stripes along their back. Males of this species are larger, grey, and sport long horns.

A teeny bit of Tamandua content to get you through the week!

Gus is one of the Tamandua Ambassadors at ZooTampa. You may have seen Gus at some of our wildlife connections, where he chows down on his favorite treats and serves as an ambassador for his species! Tamanduas are small, arboreal anteaters with incredibly long tongues that can reach up to 16 inches.

Behind the scenes, Gus has plenty of branches and fun props to practice his climbing skills!

Forest-dwellers ought to have an excellent sense of smell!

Yellow-backed duikers are an African species of antelope that is most commonly found in the forests of West and Central Africa. As largely solitary animals, they mark their territory with strong-smelling scent glands. Other duikers are able to easily pick up this scent with their powerful sense of smell!

At ZooTampa, you may see a pair of yellow-backed duikers in our Wild Africa habitat from the comfort of Expedition Wild Africa! Here, the duikers have plenty of foliage to dive into during the day.

Wesi is having a ball!

Babirusa are excellent at finding food, locating their meals with ease. To keep Wesi's skills sharp, we can offer her enrichment that encourages her to use her sense of smell and tactile skills. 🐽

There are thousands of lizard species, but the Komodo dragon wins first place for the largest living lizard in the world!

Komodo dragons are a type of monitor lizard, a genus of lizards known for their impressive size and robust bodies, traits specific to the monitor's role in its habitat. Though monitors can grow quite large, Komodo dragons outsize all other species in both size and weight.

Why did Komodo dragons evolve to be so large? This species is traditionally considered an example of Island Gigantism, a phenomenon in which species isolated on islands evolve to be much larger than their continental counterparts. Now native to Indonesian islands like Komodo, the species has been isolated from the mainland for quite some time.

We're harvesting hydrilla for a good cause! 🌿

Hydrilla is an invasive, fast-growing aquatic plant found in Florida's freshwater habitats. Even though it is an invasive species, manatees have been fighting back by eating the plant in massive quantities.

Recently, our friends at the Mosaic Company invited us out to harvest some of the hydrilla found growing in the freshwater areas on their land. Our team was able to collect a significant amount of the plant and will be feeding it to the manatees undergoing treatment at the David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center.
