Taunton Police Investigating Shooting at Weir Street House Party: The Taunton Police Department is actively investigating a shooting that occurred at an apparent house party early Sunday morning and resulted in several people being injured.

At approximately 12:37 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, Taunton Police received several 911 calls reporting shots fired and multiple people shot in the area of Weir and Sumner streets.

Responding officers determined that the shooting occurred at a home on Weir Street near the intersection of Sumner Street, where officers located multiple gunshot victims.

Multiple victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Police have also learned that additional victims may have left the scene and sought medical treatment on their own.

The exact number of victims and the extent of their injuries remain under investigation. There are no known fatalities at this time.

Taunton Police Detectives and Massachusetts State Police Detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section also responded to assist with the investigation.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional information will be released when it becomes available.

Chief Walsh and the Taunton Police Department would like to congratulate Chief Robert Stephanian. Chief Stephanian was sworn in earlier today as the Chief of Police for the Massachusetts Bay Community College.

Chief Stephanian served the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office with distinction for many years prior to his new role. During his tenure in Plymouth County, then Capt Stephanian was an invaluable resource to the Taunton Police Department on numerous occasions and we are both grateful to him and excited for his new achievement!

Congratulations to Officer Nancy Cherenfant and Officer Te***ne Grantham, who were sworn in tonight as Taunton's newest police officers! Officer Cherenfant and Officer Grantham recently graduated from the police academy and will be beginning field training. Welcome aboard!

It is with profound sadness that Chief Walsh recognizes the passing of Retired Taunton Police Lieutenant Frederick M. (Freddy) Simmons. Freddy joined the department in January of 1959 and served honorably until September of 1992. Fred was a long-time Lieutenant on the evening shift and also served as Dive Team Commander. Freddy was also a family man who loved hunting and fishing and was happiest when he was with his brothers and extended family, especially when he was at the family house in Maine. Sadly, Freddy was recently pre-deceased by his loving wife, Janice. We pray they are reunited once again and offer our sincerest condolences to Lieutenant Simmons’s family and loved ones.
